Thermostat problems we fix

Most of these look like a furnace or heat pump problem. They are usually the thermostat, or how it was wired and programmed.

  • Auxiliary or emergency heat running far too often

The thermostat is calling for backup electric heat whenever the temperature drops a degree, which is the fastest way to a shocking hydro bill. We set the balance point and the staging so the heat pump does the work and backup heat only comes on when it should.

  • Furnace or heat pump short cycling

A thermostat with the wrong cycle rate or a poor location, like over a supply register or in direct sun, turns the system on and off every few minutes. We correct the settings or relocate the thermostat.

  • New smart thermostat and now the system does nothing, or the fan runs non-stop

Wrong wiring. Heat pump O/B reversing valve wires, dual-fuel set-ups and older two-wire systems trip up a lot of DIY installs. We rewire it correctly and configure the thermostat for your equipment.

  • Thermostat keeps rebooting or losing Wi-Fi

No C-wire. Smart thermostats need constant 24V power. We run a proper common wire or install an adapter at the furnace so it stays powered.

  • Hybrid system and you are not sure the furnace is taking over when it should

A dual-fuel thermostat or control board hands off from heat pump to gas furnace at a set outdoor temperature. We set that changeover for your home and fuel prices so you run the cheapest heat at every temperature. Learn more about hybrid furnace and heat pump systems.

  • Rooms are different temperatures than the thermostat says

Sometimes a stuck or miscalibrated sensor, sometimes a thermostat in the wrong spot. We calibrate, relocate, or add a remote sensor so the bedroom, not the hallway, sets the temperature.

How a thermostat installation works with EHI

  1. 1

Match the thermostat to your equipment

Single-stage furnace, two-stage, heat pump, hybrid or ductless: each needs a different thermostat and set-up. We check the equipment and wiring at the furnace first.

  2. 2

    Wire it properly

C-wire, O/B, W2 and auxiliary heat connections, done at both ends. No jumpers left in that should not be there.

  3. 3

    Configure and test

We set the equipment type, cycle rates, balance point and auxiliary lockout, then run every stage and watch the system respond.

  4. 4

    Rebate and hand-over

We connect the app, set a sensible schedule and submit the $100 smart thermostat rebate where you qualify. Program terms can change, so we confirm eligibility first.

Frequently asked questions

How much does thermostat installation cost in Ontario?

Thermostat installation cost depends on the thermostat and the wiring work, so EHI quotes a guaranteed price up front. A simple furnace thermostat replacement is a quick visit, while a smart thermostat with a new C-wire and heat pump configuration takes longer. A $100 rebate is available on qualifying smart thermostats through the Home Renovation Savings Program.

Is there a rebate for smart thermostats in Ontario?

Yes. The Home Renovation Savings Program offers a $100 rebate on qualifying smart thermostats for eligible Ontario homes. EHI confirms eligibility before installation and handles the paperwork. Program terms can change, so check before you buy.

Do I need a C-wire for a smart thermostat?

In most cases, yes. A smart thermostat needs continuous 24V power from a common (C) wire to run its display and Wi-Fi. If your existing cable has no spare wire, we run a new one or install a C-wire adapter at the furnace so the thermostat never drops offline.

What is the balance point on a heat pump thermostat?

The balance point is the outdoor temperature below which the heat pump alone can no longer meet the heat loss of the house and backup heat, either electric auxiliary or a gas furnace, is allowed to help. Setting it correctly keeps auxiliary heat off until it is needed, which is the main thing that keeps heat pump hydro bills low.

Why is my auxiliary heat running so much?

Auxiliary heat runs too often when the thermostat's balance point or auxiliary lockout is set too warm, when large setbacks make the thermostat call for a fast recovery, or when the thermostat is not configured for a heat pump at all. Correct configuration fixes it in most homes.

Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump?

Most current smart thermostats support heat pumps, including auxiliary heat and dual-fuel control, but they must be wired and configured for it. We pick a compatible model and set the equipment type, O/B wiring and staging so your heat pump runs the way it was designed.
