Heating and cooling in Niagara-on-the-Lake without spoiling the view
Historic homes in Old Town, some of the oldest in Ontario, were built long before anyone thought about air conditioning. Most have plaster walls, original woodwork and a front elevation that owners want to keep exactly as it is. Window units and a big condenser by the front walk don't fit that picture.
There are better ways in. A slim-duct system hides a compact air handler in the attic, a closet or a basement corner and feeds a few rooms through short ducts that end in small, low-profile grilles. Ductless wall heads suit rooms where even a short duct run isn't practical. Both connect to an outdoor heat pump that can go at the back of the lot, behind a fence or beside a garden wall.
If your home is a designated heritage property or sits in the Old Town heritage district, the town may need to approve visible exterior changes. We plan placement with that in mind and give you the equipment details for any application before booking the install.
- Outdoor units placed to the rear or side, out of the streetscape
- Line sets run inside walls or closets where possible, or under painted covers
- Core holes drilled from the inside and sealed to protect masonry
- Heat-loss sizing for each room, including drafty older windows

What heritage homeowners and innkeepers ask us to fix
Old houses and guest accommodation bring their own set of comfort problems. Here's how we solve the ones we hear about most.
Guests complain about rattling window air conditioners
Window units are loud, leak warm air around the frame and look out of place on a period home. Ductless heads run quietly on inverter-driven compressors, ramping gently instead of slamming on and off.
One guest wants it cool, the next room wants it warm
A multi-zone system gives every room its own indoor head and remote, all running from one outdoor unit. Each guest sets their own comfort and nobody touches the hallway thermostat.
The only spot for a condenser is in plain view of the street
We look at the whole lot first: rear yards, side gardens, flat roofs over additions and spots behind existing fences. Longer line sets let us keep the outdoor unit well away from the front.
You don't want ducts cut into plaster ceilings
Slim-duct air handlers tuck into an attic or closet and use short runs, while ductless heads need one small wall opening each. Your mouldings and plaster stay as they are.
Summer humidity makes the old house feel stuffy
A correctly sized heat pump running long, slow cycles removes moisture as it cools. That helps period woodwork and furniture as much as it helps you sleep.
A newer home in Virgil has a builder furnace that's losing ground
Not every home here is historic. For newer houses with good ducts, a central cold-climate heat pump or a high-efficiency furnace is often the simplest upgrade.

Pricing for discreet heating and cooling systems
Starting points for the systems heritage homes and guest houses ask about most. After we walk the property, a guaranteed quote takes over from these figures.
| System | Suits | Installed price |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-zone ductless heat pump | B&Bs and homes that want room-by-room control | Quote |
| Slim-duct concealed air handler | Heritage interiors where wall heads won't do | Quote |
| Single-zone ductless heat pump | One room, a sunroom or an addition | Quote |
| Cold-climate ducted heat pump | Newer homes with existing ducts | From $5,500 |
| High-efficiency gas furnace | Replacing an older furnace | From $3,300 |
| Rinnai tankless water heater | Back-to-back guest showers | From $3,300 |
Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements, including how far the outdoor unit sits from the house, and the agreed scope carries one guaranteed price. Qualifying cold-climate heat pumps may earn up to $7,500 through the Home Renovation Savings Program, with a smaller amount for gas-heated homes. Since the program's terms can shift, eligibility is checked before a single unit goes in. Payment plans run at 0% for 3, 6 or 9 months, and open loans start from 2.99% OAC.

Replaces our AC with a new heat pump in Ottawa and the whole experience was outstanding. From the first call, Dustin was incredibly responsive and communicated clearly every step of the way. He cut through all the usual sales fluff and got straight to what mattered — options, costs, timelines, and what made the most sense for our home. They addressed every concern I had, explained the details discussed my technical questions, and handled the installation quickly and professionally. The quality of the work is excellent, everything was done cleanly, and the system has been running perfectly since. Pricing was fair and transparent, and there were no surprises. It’s rare to find a company that combines speed, honesty, and solid workmanship like this. Highly recommended.
Recently got a shiny new heat pump installed. Went very well, nice unit and it works soooo quietly. These fine folks were very easy to deal with, professional and thourough. Would highly recommend.
Efficient Home Improvements truly went above and beyond. Our furnace failed on Christmas Eve in Ottawa, and their team stayed up late (3:00am) that night to replace it. Their responsiveness, professionalism, and dedication during the holidays were exceptional. The work was completed efficiently, and everything was explained clearly. It’s rare to find a company willing to sacrifice their own holiday time to ensure a customer’s home is warm and safe. I highly recommend Efficient Home improvements to anyone in need of reliable and compassionate service.
I recently had a new furnace and tankless water heater installed by this company. Excellent service by both office and technicians , I highly recommend!
The Installers were great.. Got in and got the job done..the furnace works amazing compared to the old one !!! Need a furnace..A/C water tankless system..there your guys!!!!
Had a tankless water heater installed and couldn’t be happier. The installation was quick, professional, and the system works great — endless hot water and more efficient than my old tank. Highly recommend!
Dustin and his team were really responsive and helpful in getting us a new heat pump to replace our broken AC unit. The team went above and beyond helping us through the process and answering other questions about the house we recently moved in to. I would highly recommend Efficient Home Improvements for any of your HVAC needs.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put a heat pump on a heritage home in Niagara-on-the-Lake?
Yes. For heat pump installation in Niagara-on-the-Lake's heritage homes, we place the outdoor unit away from the street and use ductless or slim-duct indoor units, and if the home is designated, we give you equipment details for any approval the town requires.
What is a slim-duct system?
A slim-duct system is a compact, concealed air handler that sits in an attic, closet or ceiling space and feeds a few rooms through short ducts. All that shows in the room is a small grille or two.
Are ductless units quiet enough for B&B guest rooms?
Yes. Indoor heads are much quieter than window air conditioners, and inverter-driven compressors ramp up and down gently instead of cycling on and off.
Can each guest room have its own temperature control?
Yes. A multi-zone ductless system gives every room its own indoor head and remote, all connected to one outdoor unit.
Who supplies electricity in Niagara-on-the-Lake?
Niagara-on-the-Lake Hydro is the local electricity utility, and Enbridge Gas supplies natural gas. We compare both before recommending how much heating a heat pump should carry.
Do you offer AC repair in Niagara-on-the-Lake during the summer season?
Yes. We repair ductless, central and heat pump systems and take emergency calls evenings, weekends and holidays.
