Heat pump problems we fix

Most heat pump service calls start with one of these. Here's what's usually behind it and what we do.

  • Heat pump not heating

The thermostat calls for heat, the outdoor unit runs, and the vents blow lukewarm air. The usual suspects are low refrigerant charge, a reversing valve stuck in cooling, or a failed outdoor fan motor. We test pressures and the valve, find any leak, and repair the cause instead of just topping up refrigerant.

  • Heat pump not cooling

Same machine, opposite problem. Dirty coils, a weak capacitor, a plugged filter or a low charge all stop a heat pump from cooling on a muggy July night. We clean, test and replace only what has actually failed.

  • Ice on the outdoor unit, or stuck in defrost

Light frost in winter is normal. A unit buried in ice, or one that drops into defrost every few minutes, is not. A failed defrost sensor, a control board fault or low charge is usually to blame. We test the defrost cycle and sensor readings and fix the cause, not just the ice.

  • Blowing cold air in heat mode

Sometimes it's a normal defrost cycle that lasts a few minutes. Sometimes the reversing valve is stuck, or the system is locked out on an error code. We read the codes, cycle the valve and tell you which it is before we touch anything.

  • Auxiliary heat running all the time

If the AUX or EM HEAT light never goes off, your electric backup strips are doing the heat pump's job and your hydro bill knows it. Causes include lost refrigerant, a thermostat set up wrong, or an outdoor unit that quit. We fix the heat pump and set the thermostat so backup only runs when it should.

  • Short cycling

A heat pump that starts and stops every few minutes wears out its compressor early. An oversized system, a failing capacitor, a dirty filter or a wiring fault are the common causes. We find which one it is.

  • Error codes and loud noises

A flashing code is the system telling you where it hurts. Grinding, rattling or a loud buzz usually points to a fan motor, contactor or compressor problem. We decode it, explain it and quote the fix in writing.

  • Hydro bill has jumped

A heat pump that's low on charge, running with a dirty coil or leaning on auxiliary heat can double your winter hydro bill without ever shutting off. A heat pump tune-up usually finds the reason in under an hour.

  • Sound familiar?

Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

What our heat pump maintenance visit includes

Book it once a year, or spring and fall if the heat pump is your only heating and cooling. Most manufacturers ask for proof of annual service to keep the parts warranty valid, and we leave you a dated report for exactly that.

  • Refrigerant charge checked against the manufacturer's superheat and subcooling targets, with a leak search if it's low
  • Outdoor and indoor coils cleaned. A heat pump's outdoor coil works twelve months a year, so heat pump cleaning matters more than on a summer-only AC
  • Defrost cycle and sensors tested so the unit sheds ice in January without defrosting every ten minutes
  • Reversing valve confirmed in both heating and cooling
  • Electrical: contactor, capacitors, wiring connections, and amp draw on the compressor and fan motors
  • Filter replaced or cleaned, blower wheel inspected, airflow and static pressure measured
  • Condensate drain and pan flushed so you don't find water around the air handler in July
  • Thermostat and auxiliary heat settings checked so the backup strips or furnace only run when they should
  • Written report, any recommendations, and a service record for your warranty file

Repair or replace: how we call it

Under about ten years old, with a clear fault like a capacitor, contactor, fan motor or sensor, repair is almost always the right move. The part is affordable and the rest of the system has years left.

Past twelve to fifteen years, with a failed compressor, a leaking coil, or an older refrigerant that's expensive to source, the math changes. If the repair bill is a big chunk of what a new system costs, we'll say so. A new cold climate heat pump heats better at -20°C than anything built fifteen years ago, and the Ontario rebate can return up to $7,500. We show you both numbers and let you decide. No pressure either way.

Frequently asked questions

How much does heat pump repair cost in Ontario?

Heat pump repair cost depends on which part failed, the brand and how hard it is to reach, so we diagnose first and give you a written quote before any work starts. Capacitors, contactors and sensors sit at the low end; compressor, coil and reversing valve work costs more, and that's where we talk honestly about repair versus replacement.

Why is my heat pump not cooling?

A heat pump that is not cooling usually has a dirty outdoor coil, a plugged filter, a failed capacitor or a low refrigerant charge. Less often the reversing valve is stuck in heating. A technician can test all four in one visit.

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heat mode?

Cold air in heat mode is normal for a few minutes during a defrost cycle, when the system briefly runs in reverse to melt ice off the outdoor coil. If it lasts longer than about ten minutes, or happens constantly, the cause is usually low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve or a control fault, and it needs service.

Is ice on my heat pump normal?

A thin layer of frost on the outdoor coil in winter is normal and the defrost cycle clears it. Thick ice covering the coil or the top of the unit is not normal and usually means a defrost problem, low refrigerant or restricted airflow. Switch to emergency heat and call us rather than chipping at the ice.

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

A heat pump should be serviced once a year at minimum, and twice a year (spring and fall) if it is your only heating and cooling system, because it runs in both seasons. Annual heat pump maintenance keeps the parts warranty valid with most manufacturers and catches small problems before a cold snap does.

Do you repair heat pumps you didn't install?

Yes. We repair and maintain heat pumps of any brand across Ontario, not just the Midea, Kepler and Lennox systems we sell. Our licensed refrigeration technicians carry common parts and source OEM parts for the rest.

Should I repair or replace a 15-year-old heat pump?

A 15-year-old heat pump with a failed compressor or a refrigerant leak is usually worth replacing rather than repairing. A new cold climate model heats better in deep cold, uses less hydro and may qualify for up to $7,500 through the Home Renovation Savings Program. For a minor fault on a well-kept older unit, a repair still makes sense.
