Scarborough HVAC Contractor for Bungalows, Side-Splits and Basement Suites

Your furnace may be the second one this house has had. Let's plan the next one properly.

Most of the HVAC calls we take in Scarborough come from bungalows and side-splits built between the 1950s and 1970s, where the furnace is either original or on its second round. We replace tired gas furnaces and old air conditioners, add cold-climate heat pumps to the ducts you already have, and give basement apartments their own heating and cooling. Every job in this part of Ontario starts with a written, guaranteed price.

  • Furnace and AC swaps sized for post-war houses
  • Heat pumps that work with your existing ductwork
  • Separate comfort for a basement apartment
  • Gas work by TSSA-certified technicians

What an HVAC technician in Scarborough checks on a 50-year-old house

Before we quote a furnace, an AC or a heat pump, we look at the parts of a post-war home that decide what will actually work.

  • The age and AFUE on the furnace data plate, and whether it's the original unit or a replacement
  • Heat exchanger condition and venting, since many older furnaces still vent up a masonry chimney
  • Main trunk and branch duct sizes, because narrow post-war ducts can choke a larger coil
  • Return air paths, especially in side-splits where one level often has none at all
  • Panel capacity and a free space for a 240V heat pump circuit
  • The refrigerant in the old AC, since R-22 systems are costly to recharge
  • How the basement apartment is heated today, and who controls the thermostat
  • Room for an outdoor unit beside or behind the house, with a clean path for the line set

Heat pump installation in Scarborough without new ductwork

Here's the good news about a Scarborough bungalow: the ducts are usually short, simple and already in place. That makes it a strong candidate for a ducted cold-climate heat pump. The outdoor unit takes the old air conditioner's spot, a new coil sits on top of the furnace, and the same ducts carry heat in winter and cool air in summer.

Most owners keep the gas furnace as backup. The heat pump covers spring, fall and most of the winter, and the furnace takes over once a cold snap makes gas the better deal. One thermostat handles the switch. Enbridge gas-heated homes can still qualify for a heat pump rebate, commonly up to $2,000, when pre-approval is in place before installation.

There's one catch we always check. Ducts sized for a 1960s furnace sometimes can't move enough air for a bigger coil, so we measure static pressure first. If a trunk or a few runs need work, you'll know before you sign, not halfway through the install day.

Moving to a high-efficiency furnace changes the venting as well. The new furnace vents through PVC pipe out the side wall, and a gas water heater left alone in the old chimney may need a liner. We put that in the quote up front. For the rest of the city, including downtown semis and tight laneway lots, see our page on HVAC in Toronto.

  • Coil and outdoor unit matched to the furnace blower
  • Static pressure tested before anything is sized
  • Permits, gas work and warranty registration included
  • Rebate pre-approval filed before install day

Quote a separate system for your Scarborough basement suite

Plenty of Scarborough homes have a basement apartment, and one furnace serving two households rarely keeps both happy. The tenant downstairs is cold because the thermostat sits upstairs. You're paying to heat a floor you can't control. Summer flips it around: the basement turns clammy while the main floor bakes.

A ductless heat pump fixes that without touching the main system. One outdoor unit, one or two slim wall heads in the suite, and a separate control for the people living there. It heats, it cools, and it pulls moisture out of the air in July.

  • Single-zone or multi-zone, sized to the suite
  • Quiet indoor heads suited to bedrooms
  • Main-floor furnace and ducts left as they are
  • A guaranteed price that holds for the agreed scope

Frequently asked questions

How old is too old for a furnace in a Scarborough bungalow?

Most gas furnaces last about 15 to 20 years, so a unit from the 1990s or earlier is due for a replacement plan. If the heat exchanger shows cracks or a repair costs a big share of a new furnace, replacing is usually the smarter move.

Will my bungalow's original ducts work with a heat pump?

Yes, in most post-war bungalows and side-splits. We check static pressure first, because some older duct systems need a few runs upsized before they can carry a heat pump's airflow.

How do I heat and cool a basement apartment separately?

A ductless heat pump in the basement unit gives it its own heat, cooling and controls, while the main floor keeps the furnace and central ducts.

What's the price of furnace installation in Scarborough?

Expect high-efficiency gas furnaces from $3,300 installed and cold-climate heat pumps from $5,500. The final figure depends on size and installation requirements, and we guarantee it in writing.

Will I get a rebate for adding a heat pump to my gas furnace?

Often, yes. Enbridge gas-heated homes can qualify for a smaller Home Renovation Savings Program rebate, commonly up to $2,000, as long as the heat pump is on the qualified list and pre-approval is in place before installation.

Is emergency HVAC in Scarborough available on a Sunday?

Yes. Emergency calls are answered evenings, weekends and holidays, Sundays included. Call 1-647-694-5845 and we'll give you a realistic time window.
