Furnace repair problems we fix

What you notice, what's usually behind it, and what we do about it.

  • Furnace not heating at all

Check the thermostat, breaker and furnace switch first. If those are fine, it's often a failed ignitor, a stuck pressure switch or a dead control board. We test the full ignition sequence with a meter and replace only what's actually failed.

  • Blower runs but the air is cold

Burners aren't lighting, or the high limit switch is shutting them off because the filter or coil is blocking airflow. We check ignition, clean the flame sensor, test the limit and measure temperature rise.

  • Clicking, then nothing

That click is the ignitor or gas valve trying. A cracked hot surface ignitor or a flame sensor coated in oxide is the usual fix. Furnace ignitor replacement is a quick, stocked repair.

  • Furnace lights, then shuts off after a few seconds

Classic dirty flame sensor. The board can't prove there's a flame, so it closes the gas valve. We clean or replace the sensor and check the ground connection.

  • Short cycling every few minutes

A plugged filter, a failing limit switch, an oversized furnace or a bad thermostat location. We find the cause instead of just resetting the board.

  • Blower motor is loud, weak or dead

Furnace blower motor repair or replacement, including ECM and variable-speed motors. We test the capacitor and the motor's amperage before we recommend replacement.

  • Error codes on the furnace LED

Each flash pattern points to a circuit: pressure switch, limit, flame, ignition. We read the code, confirm it with real measurements and quote the fix in writing.

  • Burning smell, rumbling or a bang at start-up

Dust burn-off on the first fall start is normal for a few minutes. A rumble or bang means delayed ignition or dirty burners, which can crack a heat exchanger. Shut it off and call us.

  • CO alarm or headaches when the furnace runs

Leave the house and call 911 first. We then inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, check venting, and test carbon monoxide at the registers before the furnace runs again.

  • Sound familiar?

Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

You get the repair price in writing before we touch anything. If the furnace is near the end of its life, we include a replacement option.

  4. 4

    Repair and safety check

Most repairs are done from parts on the truck. We run a full cycle and test the safety controls before we leave.

Repair or replace your furnace?

If your furnace is under 10 years old and the fault is a single part, repair it. Ignitors, flame sensors, capacitors and pressure switches are routine and affordable.

If it's over 12 to 15 years old and the repair is a blower motor, control board, inducer motor or anything on the heat exchanger, run the numbers. In an Ontario winter, when a repair passes half the cost of a new 96% AFUE furnace, replacement usually wins on gas savings alone, and you start fresh on warranty.

We quote both. Compare with furnace installation from $3,300 or a high-efficiency furnace that cuts gas use for good.

Furnace repair and maintenance cost

  • Written quote after diagnosis

We state the diagnostic fee when you book and quote the repair in writing before any work. Simple parts like ignitors and flame sensors sit at the low end; blower motors and control boards cost more.

  • Annual tune-up

One fall visit keeps the warranty valid, cuts gas use and catches the small faults that become January emergencies. Ask for tune-up pricing when you call.

  • Every major brand

Lennox, Midea, Kepler, Goodman and other furnaces sold in Ontario. Common parts ride on the truck.

  • Financing if it's time to replace

0% for 3, 6 or 9 months on approved credit when the repair turns into a new furnace.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my furnace not heating?

A furnace that isn't heating most often has a thermostat, power or airflow problem, a failed ignitor, a dirty flame sensor or a tripped limit switch. Check the thermostat mode and batteries, the breaker, the furnace switch and the filter first, then call EHI for same-day furnace repair.

How much does furnace repair cost in Ontario?

Furnace repair cost in Ontario depends on the part. Flame sensors, ignitors and capacitors are low-cost fixes; blower motors, inducer motors and control boards cost more. EHI quotes every repair in writing after diagnosis so you know the price before work starts.

How often should a furnace be serviced?

A gas furnace should be serviced once a year, ideally in early fall before the heating season. Annual furnace maintenance keeps efficiency up, catches cracked heat exchangers and failing parts early, and is required by most manufacturers to keep extended warranty coverage.

What does a furnace tune-up include?

An EHI furnace tune-up includes cleaning the burners, flame sensor and ignitor, inspecting the heat exchanger, testing for carbon monoxide, checking gas pressure and temperature rise, testing the blower motor and capacitor, clearing the condensate drain, inspecting venting and replacing the filter.

Is a furnace blower motor worth replacing?

Yes, if the furnace is under about 12 years old and otherwise healthy. Furnace blower motor replacement is a common repair, including variable-speed ECM motors. On an older furnace we'll show you the replacement cost alongside the repair so you can decide.

How do I know if my furnace is leaking carbon monoxide?

You can't smell carbon monoxide, so a working CO alarm on every floor is the only reliable warning. Soot around the furnace, a yellow flame instead of blue, headaches when the furnace runs, or a CO alarm all mean leave the house, call 911 and then call us for a heat exchanger inspection.

Do you offer emergency furnace repair?

Yes. EHI offers same-day and after-hours furnace repair evenings, weekends and holidays across Ontario. See our emergency HVAC service page for what to check before you call.
