Insulation-aware sizing for heating and cooling in Kirkland Lake
An older home that's been upgraded loses heat very differently from the day it was built. These are the things we check before we size anything.
- Attic insulation depth and how well the attic hatch seals
- Wall construction, from original plaster to newer insulated framing
- Window age and drafts around the frames
- Basement walls and rim joists, a big heat-loss spot in older homes
- Additions built at different times with different insulation
- The size and condition of the existing ductwork
- Panel capacity for a 240V heat pump circuit
- Your current fuel and what can serve as backup heat

Why a hybrid makes sense for nights well below -30°C
The cold-climate heat pumps we install are rated to heat down to -30°C. In Kirkland Lake, that covers most of the winter, but not the nights that go well past it. A hybrid system handles those nights. The heat pump runs through fall, spring and the milder part of winter, and a furnace or electric heat takes over when it gets truly bitter.
Insulation changes the math. If you've added attic insulation, new windows or spray foam in the basement since the old furnace went in, the house now needs less heat. An oversized furnace short cycles, wears out faster and leaves cold spots between runs. We recalculate the heat loss for the house as it is today, then size the heat pump and the backup to match.
Homes on gas usually keep the furnace as backup. Homes on oil, propane, wood or electricity can choose an electric air handler or keep their existing furnace, and those homes can qualify for the higher rebate tier of up to $7,500. We confirm eligibility and file pre-approval ahead of the install, since program terms can change.

Replaces our AC with a new heat pump in Ottawa and the whole experience was outstanding. From the first call, Dustin was incredibly responsive and communicated clearly every step of the way. He cut through all the usual sales fluff and got straight to what mattered — options, costs, timelines, and what made the most sense for our home. They addressed every concern I had, explained the details discussed my technical questions, and handled the installation quickly and professionally. The quality of the work is excellent, everything was done cleanly, and the system has been running perfectly since. Pricing was fair and transparent, and there were no surprises. It’s rare to find a company that combines speed, honesty, and solid workmanship like this. Highly recommended.
Recently got a shiny new heat pump installed. Went very well, nice unit and it works soooo quietly. These fine folks were very easy to deal with, professional and thourough. Would highly recommend.
Efficient Home Improvements truly went above and beyond. Our furnace failed on Christmas Eve in Ottawa, and their team stayed up late (3:00am) that night to replace it. Their responsiveness, professionalism, and dedication during the holidays were exceptional. The work was completed efficiently, and everything was explained clearly. It’s rare to find a company willing to sacrifice their own holiday time to ensure a customer’s home is warm and safe. I highly recommend Efficient Home improvements to anyone in need of reliable and compassionate service.
I recently had a new furnace and tankless water heater installed by this company. Excellent service by both office and technicians , I highly recommend!

Had a tankless water heater installed and couldn’t be happier. The installation was quick, professional, and the system works great — endless hot water and more efficient than my old tank. Highly recommend!
Dustin and his team were really responsive and helpful in getting us a new heat pump to replace our broken AC unit. The team went above and beyond helping us through the process and answering other questions about the house we recently moved in to. I would highly recommend Efficient Home Improvements for any of your HVAC needs.

Frequently asked questions
Can a heat pump work in Kirkland Lake when it drops past -30°C?
A heat pump's output falls below its rated range, so in Kirkland Lake it should always have backup heat. In a hybrid system, the furnace or electric heat takes over automatically on those nights.
I added insulation. Is my furnace now too big?
It might be. A furnace sized for the house before the upgrade can short cycle afterward, and a new heat-loss calculation will tell us for sure.
What is insulation-aware sizing?
Insulation-aware sizing means calculating your heating needs from the walls, attic, windows and basement as they are today, not from the age of the house or the old furnace label. It keeps new equipment from being oversized.
Is it worth fixing an older furnace in a Kirkland Lake home?
If the heat exchanger is sound and the repair is minor, usually yes. If repairs keep stacking up on an older unit, we'll show you the replacement price next to the repair so you can compare.
Do you take emergency heating calls in Kirkland Lake?
Yes. We take emergency calls evenings, weekends and holidays at 1-647-694-5845, and we'll talk through the problem and your options with you.
Do you install heat pumps in Larder Lake and Englehart?
Yes. We install hybrid and cold-climate heat pump systems in Larder Lake, Englehart and across the area, and we schedule the work with you.
