Emergency HVAC in Sudbury, and why furnaces fail in deep cold

Furnaces rarely quit on a mild day. They quit on the third night of a cold snap, when they've been running almost nonstop and every weak part is under strain. A cracked ignitor, a dirty flame sensor or a blower motor on its last legs will hold on until the load gets heavy.

Venting is the other big one up here. High-efficiency furnaces breathe through plastic pipes on the side of the house, and drifting snow or frost can block them. The pressure switch then shuts the furnace down to protect you. It's a safety feature, but it still leaves you cold.

Our TSSA-certified gas technicians take emergency calls evenings, weekends and holidays. Call and we'll tell you honestly when someone can get there, and you'll see the repair price before any work begins.

  • Vent and intake clearance checked against snow depth

Winter trouble Sudbury homeowners call us about

These are the problems we see most once the season turns. Every one has a cause we can find and fix.

  • The furnace starts, runs a few minutes, then shuts off

Short cycling often comes from a dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter tripping the high-limit switch, or a furnace that's too big for the house. We test each one, fix the cause and tell you if sizing is the real issue.

  • Snow keeps blocking the vent pipes outside

When drifts or frost cover the intake or exhaust, the furnace locks itself out. We check the clearances and, where the code allows, raise or reroute the pipes so they stay above the snow.

  • Your furnace is getting old and every January feels like a gamble

We inspect the heat exchanger, blower and controls, then give you a straight answer on repair versus replacement. If it's time, a two-stage, variable-speed furnace at 96% AFUE or higher runs quieter and burns less gas.

  • Oil or propane in Chelmsford or Hanmer costs too much to run

A cold-climate heat pump can take over most of the heating, with your existing furnace or an electric air handler as backup. Homes heated by oil, propane, wood or electricity can qualify for the higher rebate tier, up to $7,500.

  • The heat pump switches to backup heat far too early

A poorly set switchover point burns expensive backup heat when the heat pump could still do the job. We set it from your home's heat loss and your actual fuel and hydro costs.

  • Bedrooms at the far end of the bungalow stay chilly

Post-war bungalows often have long, leaky duct runs. We seal joints, balance the dampers and check return air before suggesting bigger equipment.

  • Sound familiar?

Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer emergency furnace repair in Sudbury?

Yes. We take emergency heating calls in Sudbury evenings, weekends and holidays. Call 1-647-694-5845 and we'll tell you when a technician can reach you.

How often should a Sudbury furnace be serviced?

Book a furnace tune-up every year, and aim for September or October, before the furnace starts working hard. A tune-up catches worn ignitors, dirty flame sensors and blocked vents before they leave you without heat.

What backup heat works with a heat pump in Sudbury?

The two common options are your existing gas or propane furnace in a hybrid setup, or an electric air handler with built-in heat strips. We pick based on your fuel, your ductwork and your hydro costs.

Can a heat pump work in a Sudbury home with no natural gas?

Yes. A cold-climate heat pump rated to -30°C, paired with electric backup heat, can heat a home off the gas line through a Sudbury winter. Homes heated by oil, propane, wood or electricity may qualify for up to $7,500 in rebates.

Should I repair my old furnace or replace it?

Repair usually makes sense when the furnace is younger and the part is minor. When the heat exchanger is cracked or repairs keep stacking up on an older unit, replacement is usually the better spend, and we'll show you both numbers.

Is EHI a Sudbury HVAC contractor?

Our office is in Stouffville, and our licensed crews serve Sudbury, Lively, Val Caron and the surrounding communities. We schedule assessments and installs with you directly.
