HVAC in Toronto: what makes this city different

Toronto houses are older, closer together and more varied than most of Ontario. That changes what equipment fits and how we install it.

  • Typical homesCentury semis to condo towns

Brick row houses in Leslieville and the Annex, post-war bungalows in Scarborough and Etobicoke, and newer townhomes all need a different plan.

  • Hydro and gasToronto Hydro and Enbridge Gas

We compare your hydro rates and Enbridge gas use before recommending a heat pump, so the running cost numbers are real.

  • Tight lotsLaneways and narrow side yards

Plenty of Toronto lots leave about a metre beside the house. We plan unit placement and noise before install day, not on it.

  • HoursOpen 7 days

Monday to Saturday 8 am to 8 pm, Sunday 10 am to 5 pm, with emergency calls evenings, weekends and holidays.

Toronto HVAC problems our technicians fix

Most calls we get from Toronto start with one of these. Each one has a clear fix.

  • The top floor of your semi is an oven every July

Century homes were built for radiators, not air conditioning. We fix it with a ductless mini split for the upper floor, or a properly sized central system with enough returns upstairs, so the third floor stops feeling like an attic.

  • The furnace quits on the coldest night of January

Our TSSA-certified gas technicians diagnose ignitors, flame sensors, pressure switches and inducer motors on the first visit, and we take emergency calls evenings, weekends and holidays. You see a written price before we start.

  • There's no room for an outdoor unit in the side yard

We use wall brackets, compact condensers and flat-roof or rear-yard placement where your building allows it, and we run the line set neatly along the brick instead of across the window.

  • Electric baseboards are driving up the hydro bill

A cold-climate heat pump can deliver two to three times more heat than the electricity it uses in mild weather. For many baseboard-heated homes, that also means the top rebate tier.

  • Old ductwork in a 1950s bungalow is noisy and uneven

We measure static pressure, seal leaky joints and add returns where rooms are starved, then size the new system to the ducts you actually have.

  • Your townhouse board has rules about outdoor equipment

We work with your property manager on placement, noise and approvals before booking the install, so nothing gets held up.

  • The neighbour's bedroom window is a metre from where the outdoor unit has to go

On a Leslieville or High Park lot, sound is the main placement question. We compare the published decibel ratings of the units we quote, lean on inverter models that idle quietly most of the time, and set the unit where the house itself shields the neighbour. A rubber-isolated bracket or pad keeps vibration out of the wall.

  • Sound familiar?

Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

Permits, noise and placement on a tight Toronto lot

Three things decide where equipment goes on a narrow Toronto lot, and we sort all three before install day.

Permits come first. Gas work, new venting and electrical changes each have their own paperwork, and our TSSA-certified and ESA-licensed technicians pull what the job needs. Noise comes second. Outdoor units have to respect municipal noise rules and, more practically, the neighbour whose bedroom shares your side yard. We pick the spot and the unit with both in mind. Access comes third. If the only way to the backyard is through the house or down a laneway, we plan the route, protect the floors and bring equipment that fits through the gate.

For a row house with no side yard at all, a wall bracket on the rear elevation or a flat-roof mount can solve a problem that otherwise looks impossible.

Frequently asked questions

How much does HVAC installation cost in Toronto?

Most Toronto homes pay from $3,300 installed for a high-efficiency furnace and from $5,500 for a cold-climate heat pump, before rebates. Your final price depends on size, ductwork and electrical work, and we put it in writing before we start.

Do your HVAC technicians in Toronto take emergency calls?

Yes. We take emergency HVAC calls in Toronto evenings, weekends and holidays. Call 1-647-694-5845 and we'll tell you how soon a technician can get to you.

Can a heat pump heat an old Toronto brick home?

Yes, when it's sized from a proper heat-loss calculation. Cold-climate models like the Midea EVOX G3 are rated to -30°C, and many older homes keep the gas furnace as backup in a hybrid setup.

Are there heat pump rebates for Toronto homeowners?

Yes. The Home Renovation Savings Program offers up to $7,500 for qualifying cold-climate heat pumps in homes heated by electricity, oil or propane, and a smaller amount for Enbridge gas-heated homes. Pre-approval must be in place before installation, and we handle the paperwork.

What should I look for in Toronto HVAC companies?

Look for TSSA-certified gas technicians, a written quote with model numbers, permits included and a real warranty. Ask who actually does the install. At EHI, it's our own licensed crew.

Do you install HVAC in Toronto townhouses and condos?

Yes. We install ductless and compact systems in townhouses and many low-rise condos once the property manager approves placement, and we help you put that request together.
