AC Repair · Toronto
Central, ductless and heat pump cooling, every make, quoted in writing
AC repair in Toronto gets urgent fast. The lake keeps the air thick, a top-floor bedroom in a semi turns into a sauna, and the condenser is jammed in a side yard where it can barely breathe. Our licensed refrigeration technicians find the fault, show you the reading, and give you a written price before any work starts.

Toronto lots and Toronto houses give air conditioners a hard life. Here is what goes wrong and how we put it right.
The unit sat all winter and a weak run capacitor or pitted contactor finally gave up, or the charge is low from a slow leak. We test the capacitor under load, check pressures and amp draw, and replace what actually failed. Both parts ride on the truck.
An outdoor unit needs clear space to dump heat. Pressed against the neighbour's wall with a fence on the other side, it runs hot, trips on high pressure and shortens the compressor's life. We clean the coil, restore what clearance we can, and if the spot is hopeless we quote moving it to a wall bracket or the rear yard.
Century semis were ducted for heat, and the few supply runs that reach the top floor cannot carry enough cold air. We check static pressure and dampers first. Often the honest fix is a single ductless head upstairs so the central system can stop fighting a battle it cannot win.
R-22 refrigerant is no longer produced, so every top-up on an older Toronto unit costs more than the last and the leak is still there. We will repair a small leak if the unit is sound, but we will also show you what a replacement or a cold-climate heat pump costs, because that math has changed.
A compressor pulling high starting amps, a dying capacitor or a tired breaker in a 60-year-old panel all look the same from the kitchen. We measure the inrush current and inspect the disconnect and panel, with ESA-licensed electrical work if the fix is on that side.
The evaporator coil above your furnace pulls litres of water out of humid Toronto air every day. When the drain line clogs with slime or the trap is missing, that water goes onto the floor. We clear the line, add a trap or a float switch, and check the coil for ice.
Ductless units in Toronto additions and third floors fail for two main reasons: a plugged condensate drain and a blocked filter or coil. Both are quick. If the problem is the line set or the outdoor unit, a licensed tech leak tests it before adding any refrigerant.
An oversized air conditioner cools the air near the thermostat and shuts off before it has pulled the humidity out. Lake humidity makes it worse. We confirm the sizing against the house and, when you replace, recommend a variable-speed system that runs long and dries the air properly.
Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.
Repairs are priced in writing after diagnosis. When the repair is a big one, we quote a new air conditioner and a cold-climate heat pump beside it so you can compare.
| Service | Typical price in Toronto |
|---|---|
| AC repair Diagnostic visit plus common parts such as capacitors, contactors and refrigerant leak repair | Quote after diagnosis |
| Central air conditioner, installed Lennox or Midea, sized from a heat-gain calculation | Written quote |
| Cold-climate heat pump, installed Midea EVOX G3 or Kepler, 2 to 5 ton, rated to -30°C | From $5,500 |
Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements, and every job gets a written, guaranteed quote. Qualifying cold-climate heat pumps can bring back up to $7,500 through the Home Renovation Savings Program, and financing runs 0% for 3, 6 or 9 months on approved credit.
Diagnosis first, price second, work third. Always in that order.
Warm air, ice, water, a tripping breaker or a dead outdoor unit. If someone in the home is vulnerable to heat, tell us and we move it up the list.
A licensed refrigeration tech checks pressures, superheat and subcooling, capacitor and contactor, amp draws and the temperature drop across the coil, and shows you the readings.
One price for the repair. If the unit is old or the part is a compressor or coil, a replacement and a heat pump option sit beside it with the rebate estimate.
Most Toronto AC repairs are done on the first visit from parts on the truck. We run the system until the temperature drop is back in range and leave the side yard as we found it.
A cold-climate heat pump is an air conditioner that also runs in reverse. It cools your home the same way a central AC does, then heats it for most of the winter, and a qualifying model can bring back up to $7,500 through the Home Renovation Savings Program. When an old AC is past saving, this is what we quote first.

A repair call is also a check-up, because a second fault usually hides behind the first.

Not every AC repair is worth doing, and the answer in Toronto depends on more than the unit's age. We ask three things before we recommend anything.
What refrigerant is in it? An R-22 unit with a leak is at the end of the road whatever its age, because the refrigerant is scarce and the leak will not fix itself. An R-410A unit with a capacitor fault has years left.
Where does the condenser sit? A unit that has been cooking in a one-metre side yard for 15 years has had a harder life than its age suggests. If the compressor is tired and the spot is bad, replacing it on a wall bracket in a better location pays twice.
Can the ducts carry the cooling? If the top floor never gets cold, a new central unit will not fix that. The right plan may be a smaller central system plus a ductless head, or a heat pump that earns a rebate while it replaces the AC.
Our AC repair and maintenance page for Ontario covers the annual tune-up in detail, and HVAC in Toronto covers the rest of what we do in the city.

We had a heat pump/AC unit installed by EHI, on time, on budget, great workmanship. Julian and team were knowledgeable and courteous. Dustin communicated well and is managing our government rebate for the new efficient system. Thank you Team!
Replaces our AC with a new heat pump in Ottawa and the whole experience was outstanding. From the first call, Dustin was incredibly responsive and communicated clearly every step of the way. He cut through all the usual sales fluff and got straight to what mattered — options, costs, timelines, and what made the most sense for our home. They addressed every concern I had, explained the details discussed my technical questions, and handled the installation quickly and professionally. The quality of the work is excellent, everything was done cleanly, and the system has been running perfectly since. Pricing was fair and transparent, and there were no surprises. It’s rare to find a company that combines speed, honesty, and solid workmanship like this. Highly recommended.
Recently got a shiny new heat pump installed. Went very well, nice unit and it works soooo quietly. These fine folks were very easy to deal with, professional and thourough. Would highly recommend.
Efficient Home Improvements truly went above and beyond. Our furnace failed on Christmas Eve in Ottawa, and their team stayed up late (3:00am) that night to replace it. Their responsiveness, professionalism, and dedication during the holidays were exceptional. The work was completed efficiently, and everything was explained clearly. It’s rare to find a company willing to sacrifice their own holiday time to ensure a customer’s home is warm and safe. I highly recommend Efficient Home improvements to anyone in need of reliable and compassionate service.
I recently had a new furnace and tankless water heater installed by this company. Excellent service by both office and technicians , I highly recommend!
The Installers were great.. Got in and got the job done..the furnace works amazing compared to the old one !!! Need a furnace..A/C water tankless system..there your guys!!!!
Had a tankless water heater installed and couldn’t be happier. The installation was quick, professional, and the system works great — endless hot water and more efficient than my old tank. Highly recommend!
Dustin and his team were really responsive and helpful in getting us a new heat pump to replace our broken AC unit. The team went above and beyond helping us through the process and answering other questions about the house we recently moved in to. I would highly recommend Efficient Home Improvements for any of your HVAC needs.

AC repair in Toronto is quoted in writing after diagnosis, because the price depends on the part. A capacitor or contactor is a modest repair, while a compressor or evaporator coil can approach the cost of a new system. At that point we quote a replacement and a cold-climate heat pump from $5,500 installed beside the repair.
Yes. During heat waves we take AC repair calls in Toronto evenings, weekends and holidays, and we prioritize homes where someone is vulnerable to heat. Call 1-647-694-5845 and we will tell you honestly when a licensed technician can get there.
An air conditioner that cools the main floor but not the upstairs is usually fighting old ductwork with too few supply runs and almost no return air on the top floor. We measure static pressure and balance what we can, and in many Toronto semis a ductless head upstairs is the fix that actually works.
Usually not if the repair involves refrigerant. R-22 is no longer produced, so top-ups are expensive and the leak remains. A small electrical repair on an R-22 unit can make sense for a season, but we will show you the replacement and heat pump numbers so you can plan rather than get caught in the next heat wave.
Yes. A cold-climate heat pump uses the same ducts and indoor coil position as a central AC, cools the same way, and heats for most of the winter. If the model is on NRCan's qualified list and pre-approval is in place before installation, a Toronto home heated by electricity can receive up to $7,500 and an Enbridge gas-heated home commonly up to $2,000, subject to program terms.
Yes. We repair central and ductless air conditioners in townhouses and low-rise condos, including units on balconies, roofs and in shared side yards, and we coordinate with your property manager when the equipment or the access is shared.
