Problems a whole house humidifier solves

Forced-air heat dries indoor air to desert levels by January. Here is what that does, and how a humidifier fixes it.

  • Static shocks and dry, itchy skin all winter

Indoor humidity below 20% is common in Ontario homes in January. A whole-home humidifier holds the house at 30 to 40% RH, which ends the shocks and the chapped hands.

  • Hardwood floors gapping, trim cracking, the piano going out of tune

Wood shrinks as it dries. Steady humidity from a furnace humidifier protects floors, cabinets, doors and instruments better than any amount of refinishing.

  • Nosebleeds, scratchy throats and dry eyes in the morning

Dry air irritates the nose and throat lining, especially for kids and anyone with allergies or asthma. Properly humidified air is noticeably easier to breathe overnight.

  • The house feels colder than the thermostat says

Dry air pulls moisture off your skin and makes 20°C feel like 18°C. At 35% humidity most people can turn the thermostat down a degree and feel just as warm, which trims the gas bill.

  • Your old humidifier runs but nothing changes

A scaled-up pad, a stuck solenoid valve, a failed humidistat or a bypass damper left closed will do that. Our furnace humidifier repair visit fixes the common faults, and we replace the pad while we are there.

  • Condensation on the windows every morning

That is too much humidity, or a humidistat set too high for the outdoor temperature. We set the control correctly, and if the house is tight, pair the humidifier with an HRV so you get fresh air without the dripping windows.

Furnace humidifier options we install

All three mount on the ductwork at your furnace or heat pump air handler and run only when the system runs, so the whole house gets even humidity.

Bypass humidifier

Uses furnace airflow pushed through a wet pad via a bypass duct. Lowest cost, no moving parts, quiet. Good for most homes up to about 2,500 square feet.

Fan-powered humidifier

A built-in fan pulls air across the pad, so it adds more moisture per hour and does not need a bypass duct. The right pick for larger homes or tight furnace rooms.

Steam humidifier

Boils water and injects steam into the duct, independent of furnace airflow. Highest output and the best choice for big homes, heat pump air handlers with lower supply temperatures, or anyone with hardwood and instruments to protect.

What is included in a whole home humidifier installation

  • Sizing to your square footage, how tight the house is and the heating system type
  • Mounting on the supply or return plenum with a sealed cut-out and the bypass duct where required
  • Saddle valve or proper tee on the water line, with a drain line to a floor drain or condensate pump
  • Humidistat or digital control, wired to the furnace or air handler so it runs only with airflow
  • 120V power connection for fan-powered and steam units by ESA-licensed electricians
  • Set-up and a walk-through of the winter settings, pad changes and the spring shut-off

Furnace humidifier maintenance: once a year keeps it working

A humidifier is simple, but it is also the most neglected part on a furnace. Each fall we do the following.

  1. 1

    Replace the water panel (pad)

Ontario water is hard, and a pad loads up with scale in one heating season. A fresh pad every fall is the single most important step.

  2. 2

    Clean and test

We clean the housing and drain, check the solenoid valve, water flow and bypass damper, and test the humidistat.

  3. 3

    Set it for the season

Humidity should drop as the outdoor temperature drops to avoid window condensation. We set the control and show you how to adjust it in a cold snap.

Frequently asked questions

How much does furnace humidifier installation cost in Ontario?

Furnace humidifier installation cost depends on the type, with bypass units the least expensive, fan-powered in the middle and steam units the most. EHI quotes a guaranteed installed price after seeing your furnace room, and we can bundle it with a furnace or heat pump installation.

What humidity level should my house be in winter?

Aim for 30 to 40% relative humidity in an Ontario winter. Lower the setting on very cold days, closer to 30% at -20°C, to avoid condensation on the windows, and run it up to 40% in milder weather.

Can a humidifier work with a heat pump air handler?

Yes. Bypass and fan-powered humidifiers mount on a heat pump air handler the same way they do on a furnace, and a steam humidifier is often the best match because it does not depend on high supply-air temperatures to evaporate water.

How often should the humidifier pad be replaced?

Replace the humidifier pad, also called the water panel, once a year at the start of the heating season. Homes with very hard well water may need a mid-winter change as well.

Why is my furnace humidifier not working?

The usual causes are a scaled-up pad, a clogged or stuck solenoid valve, no water supply from a closed saddle valve, a failed humidistat, or a bypass damper left in the summer position. We diagnose and repair these on a single visit and replace the pad at the same time.

Is a bypass or fan-powered humidifier better?

A bypass humidifier is quieter, cheaper and has no fan to fail, which suits most homes under about 2,500 square feet. A fan-powered unit moves more moisture and needs no bypass duct, which makes it better for larger homes and cramped furnace rooms.
