Chatham-Kent HVAC Services for Long, Humid Summers and Older Homes

Drier air in July, steady heat in January

Summers between Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair run long and muggy, so HVAC in Chatham-Kent has to deal with moisture as much as heat. We install and repair air conditioners and heat pumps that dry the air properly, and we upgrade heating in older homes in Chatham, Wallaceburg and the smaller towns across the municipality. You'll have a guaranteed price in writing before anything starts.

  • Cooling sized to remove moisture, not just heat
  • Variable-speed and inverter options for long, gentle run times
  • Furnace and heat pump upgrades for older homes
  • Service for town houses and farm properties

Chatham-Kent heating and cooling: the climate and the homes

A big municipality with a long cooling season. These are the facts behind our advice.

  • SummerLong, hot and humid

Two lakes and wide-open farmland bring muggy air from late spring well into September, so air conditioning works hard for months.

  • WinterMilder than most of Ontario

Winters here are gentler than in much of the province, which lets a cold-climate heat pump carry more of the heating load.

  • UtilitiesEntegrus power, Enbridge gas

Entegrus delivers your power and Enbridge your gas where lines run, and both rates feed into our running-cost estimates.

  • HomesTown houses and farmhouses

Older homes in Chatham and Wallaceburg, small-town homes in Blenheim, Tilbury and Ridgetown, and farmhouses across the countryside.

Who we help with HVAC in Chatham-Kent

Homes across the municipality need different things. Here's how we approach four common ones.

Older homes in Chatham and Wallaceburg

Aging furnaces, window ACs and small ducts. We replace tired equipment and fix airflow so the upstairs actually cools down in summer.

Families fed up with sticky summers

Variable-speed AC and heat pumps that run long and slow, wringing moisture out of the air instead of just chilling it.

Farm properties off the gas line

Homes heated with propane or oil may qualify for the higher heat pump rebate tier, up to $7,500 based on heat pump size.

Homes near the lakes

Houses and cottages near Erieau and the shoreline get outdoor units raised and placed where wind and damp do less harm.

AC repair in Chatham-Kent: what a long cooling season wears out

Months of hard work in heat and humidity take a toll. Here are the problems we're called about, and the fixes.

  • The basement smells musty by mid-July

Cool basements collect moisture when the AC never runs long enough to dry the air. We look at sizing, blower speed and drainage, and add dehumidification where the house needs it.

  • The outdoor unit gives out near the end of a long summer

Months of heavy use wear down capacitors, contactors and fan motors. Our licensed refrigeration techs test each part and replace the weak ones before they quit on a hot day.

  • Dust from nearby fields clogs the outdoor coil

Rural air carries dust and chaff that blankets the coil. A clogged coil can't shed heat, so the unit runs hotter and costs more. We clean it and suggest a better spot if it sits downwind of a field.

  • A puddle shows up under the furnace every summer

Long cooling seasons push a lot of condensate through the drain, and a clogged trap or tired pump overflows. We clear the line, correct the slope and fit a float switch that stops the AC before water spills.

  • The old furnace in a Chatham house is loud and uneven

Older single-stage furnaces blast on and off. A two-stage, variable-speed furnace runs at low output most of the time, which is quieter and steadier, and it pairs well with a heat pump.

  • You heat a farmhouse with propane and the bills sting

In this milder climate a cold-climate heat pump can carry most of your heating, with the propane furnace kept as backup. Propane-heated homes may qualify for the higher rebate tier.

  • The thermostat reads 22°C but the house still feels like a greenhouse

Temperature is only half the picture between the lakes. A thermostat that also reads humidity, paired with a variable-speed system that can run a dehumidify mode, lets the AC keep working on moisture after the temperature target is met. Most people in Chatham and Tilbury find 22°C at lower humidity feels better than 20°C in sticky air, and it costs less to hold.

  • Sound familiar?

Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

Why a slightly smaller AC dries a Chatham-Kent house better

It sounds backwards, but an air conditioner that's a little smaller than the old one often leaves the house more comfortable in a humid July.

Cooling and drying happen on the same indoor coil. The coil only pulls water out of the air once it's cold and the air has been moving across it for a while. A big unit hits the thermostat setting in ten minutes and shuts off before the coil has done much drying, then starts again twenty minutes later. A correctly sized variable-speed unit runs for an hour at low speed, and that long, gentle cycle is what wrings the moisture out.

So we size from a heat-gain calculation that counts your windows, insulation and the direction the house faces, rather than matching the tonnage on the old label. Between Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair, that calculation is the difference between a cool house and a cool, clammy one.

Air conditioning in Chatham-Kent that keeps the moisture down

A heat pump cools exactly like an air conditioner in summer, then heats your home for much of the winter. With milder winters than most of Ontario, it can take on a bigger share of the heating here than it would further north. Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can a heat pump handle humidity in a Chatham-Kent summer?

Yes, if it's sized correctly. An inverter heat pump runs longer at low speed, which pulls more moisture from the air than an oversized unit that shuts off quickly.

Is a heat pump enough for winter in Chatham-Kent?

For most of the winter, yes. Winters here are milder than in much of Ontario and cold-climate models are rated to heat down to -30°C, though many homes keep a furnace as backup.

Will my propane-heated farmhouse earn a heat pump rebate?

Many do. Homes heated by propane, oil, wood or electricity may qualify for up to $7,500 based on heat pump size, with pre-approval needed before installation.

Is AC repair in Chatham-Kent possible on a summer weekend?

Yes. We take emergency calls evenings, weekends and holidays, and you get a written price before any repair.

Which towns get HVAC services in Chatham-Kent from your crews?

We serve Chatham, Wallaceburg, Blenheim, Tilbury, Ridgetown, Dresden, Erieau and the rural areas between them, working from our office in Stouffville.

How often should my AC be serviced with such a long cooling season?

Once a year, in spring before the heat arrives. We clean the coil, test the electrical parts, check the refrigerant charge and clear the condensate drain.

How much does AC installation cost in Chatham-Kent?

A central air conditioner in Chatham-Kent is priced by written quote after a heat-gain calculation sets the size. A cold-climate heat pump, which cools the same way and also heats, starts from $5,500 installed, and a high-efficiency furnace from $3,300. Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements.
