Heating and cooling in Hamilton homes that have no ductwork
A lot of Hamilton's older housing stock was heated by a boiler and cast iron radiators, or by an early furnace with a few small, tired ducts. That setup can keep you warm. It does nothing for a muggy July night in Kirkendall or Crown Point, and it leaves no easy path for central air.
You don't have to open walls to fix that. A ductless heat pump puts a slim indoor head on the wall and connects it to one outdoor unit through a hole about 8 cm wide. One outdoor unit can run several heads, so the bedrooms, the main floor and the attic room each get their own control.
Some homes suit a small concealed air handler instead. It sits in the attic or a closet and feeds a few rooms through short duct runs. We look at your floor plan, your electrical panel and your heat loss, then show you which route costs less and works better.
- Keep the boiler for the coldest days, let the heat pump carry the rest
- Line sets run on the outside of the brick and get covered with a painted line hide
- Heat-loss sizing room by room, not a guess from square footage
- 240V circuit and panel work done by ESA-licensed electricians

Problems a Hamilton HVAC contractor sees in older houses
These are the calls that come in from century homes, post-war houses on the Mountain and newer builds alike.
Window units are the only cooling in your radiator house
They're loud, they block the view and they only cool one room. A multi-zone ductless system replaces them with quiet wall heads that cool and heat, and the windows go back to being windows.
The boiler is fine, but the house has nothing for summer
We leave the boiler in place and add a cold-climate heat pump. It cools in summer, heats through spring and fall, and the boiler only takes over when the temperature really drops.
You're worried an install will crack your plaster
Ductless work needs one small core hole per head. We drill from the inside out, seal the opening and route refrigerant lines down the exterior, so the plaster and trim stay as they are.
The old ducts are too small for central air
Ducts sized for a 1950s furnace often choke a modern AC coil. We measure static pressure first, then tell you plainly whether to reuse them, upsize a few runs or go ductless.
Your house on the Mountain takes the wind head on
Open, higher ground loses heat faster. We size from a Manual J heat-loss calculation, pick equipment rated to -30°C, and set the outdoor unit on a stand out of the prevailing wind and above the drifts.
Oil heat costs keep climbing every winter
Switching an oil-heated home to a cold-climate heat pump can qualify for the higher rebate tier, up to $7,500 based on size. We handle the pre-approval before installation.
A builder furnace in a Binbrook or Waterdown home is acting up early
Our TSSA-certified gas technicians check the flame sensor, inducer, pressure switch and condensate drain, then give you a written repair price or an honest replace quote.

Replaces our AC with a new heat pump in Ottawa and the whole experience was outstanding. From the first call, Dustin was incredibly responsive and communicated clearly every step of the way. He cut through all the usual sales fluff and got straight to what mattered — options, costs, timelines, and what made the most sense for our home. They addressed every concern I had, explained the details discussed my technical questions, and handled the installation quickly and professionally. The quality of the work is excellent, everything was done cleanly, and the system has been running perfectly since. Pricing was fair and transparent, and there were no surprises. It’s rare to find a company that combines speed, honesty, and solid workmanship like this. Highly recommended.
Recently got a shiny new heat pump installed. Went very well, nice unit and it works soooo quietly. These fine folks were very easy to deal with, professional and thourough. Would highly recommend.
Efficient Home Improvements truly went above and beyond. Our furnace failed on Christmas Eve in Ottawa, and their team stayed up late (3:00am) that night to replace it. Their responsiveness, professionalism, and dedication during the holidays were exceptional. The work was completed efficiently, and everything was explained clearly. It’s rare to find a company willing to sacrifice their own holiday time to ensure a customer’s home is warm and safe. I highly recommend Efficient Home improvements to anyone in need of reliable and compassionate service.
I recently had a new furnace and tankless water heater installed by this company. Excellent service by both office and technicians , I highly recommend!
The Installers were great.. Got in and got the job done..the furnace works amazing compared to the old one !!! Need a furnace..A/C water tankless system..there your guys!!!!
Had a tankless water heater installed and couldn’t be happier. The installation was quick, professional, and the system works great — endless hot water and more efficient than my old tank. Highly recommend!
Dustin and his team were really responsive and helpful in getting us a new heat pump to replace our broken AC unit. The team went above and beyond helping us through the process and answering other questions about the house we recently moved in to. I would highly recommend Efficient Home Improvements for any of your HVAC needs.

Frequently asked questions
Can you add air conditioning to a Hamilton house with radiators?
Yes. A ductless or multi-zone heat pump cools a radiator home without any ductwork, and it also heats in spring and fall so the boiler runs less.
Do I have to remove my boiler to get a heat pump?
No. Many homeowners keep the boiler as backup for the coldest weeks and let the heat pump handle cooling and milder heating days.
How much does a ductless heat pump cost in Hamilton?
Ductless systems are quoted per home because the price depends on how many rooms you want covered and where the heads go. Ducted cold-climate heat pumps start from $5,500 installed, and every quote is guaranteed in writing.
Will a heat pump keep up on Hamilton Mountain in January?
Yes, when it's sized from a proper heat-loss calculation. Cold-climate models like the Midea EVOX G3 are rated to heat down to -30°C, and a hybrid setup adds a gas furnace as backup if you want one.
Is there emergency HVAC in Hamilton on weekends?
Yes. We take emergency calls evenings, weekends and holidays. Call 1-647-694-5845 and we'll tell you when a technician can get to you.
What should I ask Hamilton HVAC companies before hiring one?
Ask who does the install, whether the quote lists model numbers and permits, and who files the rebate pre-approval. Our TSSA-certified and licensed refrigeration techs do the work, and we handle the rebate paperwork.
