Heat pump questions Hamilton homes raise before the first hole is drilled

Every one of these comes from a real kind of Hamilton house. If your situation isn't here, our Hamilton HVAC page covers the rest of what we do in the city.

  • Your Westdale home has radiators, and every installer says add ducts first

You don't need ducts. A multi-zone ductless heat pump runs up to five wall or ceiling heads off one outdoor unit, each room on its own remote. The boiler stays for the coldest stretch of January, and the heat pump carries cooling, the shoulder seasons and most of the winter.

  • The ducts in your Mountain bungalow date from the first furnace

Post-war ducts were built for a big single-stage furnace pushing slow, hot air. A heat pump moves more air at a lower temperature, so we test static pressure before we quote. Often a larger return and two or three upsized runs are enough. If not, a compact small-duct system or ductless heads are the honest answer.

  • The third floor of your Crown Point two-and-a-half storey is an oven in July

One head in the attic room, one on the second floor and one on the main gives each level its own setting. No more hauling a window unit up three flights of stairs every June.

  • Your Stoney Creek builder furnace and AC are wearing out together

That is the cleanest hybrid case we see. A ducted EVOX G3 replaces the AC, takes over heating down to its balance point, and a new two-stage furnace or your existing one backs it up. One outdoor unit, one coil, one warranty.

  • Your 100 amp panel is already full

Most cold-climate heat pumps need a dedicated 240V circuit. Our ESA-licensed electricians run a load calculation first. Many Hamilton homes fit the new breaker as is; some need a subpanel or a service upgrade through Alectra, and that goes in the quote, not on the final invoice.

  • The lower city feels clammy even when the thermostat says 22

Lake air sits under the escarpment all summer. An inverter heat pump runs long, slow cycles instead of blasting on and off, which pulls far more moisture out of the air than an oversized single-stage AC ever did.

  • You heat with gas and assume the rebate skips you

It doesn't, it's just smaller. Enbridge gas-heated homes commonly qualify for up to $2,000 through the Home Renovation Savings Program, while homes on electric baseboards, oil or propane can get up to $7,500 based on heat pump size. We confirm eligibility before installation because program terms can change.

  • Your side yard between two brick houses is barely a metre wide

Outdoor units need clear airflow and some distance from the neighbour's bedroom window. We use wall brackets, raised stands and a quiet unit like the Kepler where the lot is tight, and we walk the clearances with you on the first visit.

  • Sound familiar?

Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

Heat pump installation cost in Hamilton

Ducted cold-climate systems start at $5,500 installed. Ductless pricing depends on the number of heads and where the line sets run, so it is quoted per home. Either way, the number you sign is the number you pay.

How a Hamilton heat pump install runs from first call to last test

Four steps, and you see the price before any of the hard ones.

  1. 1

    Walk-through and heat loss

We measure every room, note the brick, windows, insulation and existing ducts or radiators, and run a Manual J heat-loss calculation. Mountain homes get a higher design load than lower-city homes of the same size because of the wind.

  2. 2

    Written quote and rebate pre-approval

You get model numbers, size in tons, the electrical work and the installed price in writing. If you want the rebate, we file the pre-approval and wait for it before booking the install.

  3. 3

    Install day

Licensed refrigeration technicians set the outdoor unit, run and pressure-test the line set, pull a vacuum and weigh in the charge. ESA-licensed electricians run the 240V circuit. Most single-family homes take one day; a multi-zone ductless system with four or five heads can take two.

  4. 4

    Commissioning and handover

We run heating and cooling, check the temperature split, set up the thermostat or remotes, register the warranty and file the final rebate paperwork.

Sizing a heat pump for the lower city versus the Mountain

Hamilton is two climates with one postal prefix. Below the escarpment, lake air keeps winters a touch milder and summers heavier. Up top, Hamilton Mountain, Ancaster and Binbrook sit higher, catch more wind and hold snow longer. The same 1,800 square foot house can have a noticeably different heat loss depending on which side of the Jolley Cut it sits on.

That is why we don't size from square footage. We run a Manual J calculation that accounts for wall construction, window area, air leakage and the design temperature for your part of the city. From that we pick the tonnage and find the balance point, the outdoor temperature where the heat pump's output equals the house's loss. For most Hamilton homes a cold-climate unit carries the load well below -15°C on its own.

Below the balance point, backup takes over: the existing boiler in a radiator home, a gas furnace in a hybrid system, or electric strips in an air handler. We show you where that point lands for your house, so you know what the hydro and gas bills will look like, not just the purchase price.

  • Design load from Manual J, not a rule of thumb
  • Capacity checked at -15°C, not just the nameplate rating
  • Backup sized to the gap, not to the whole house
  • Duct static pressure measured before any ducted unit is quoted

Frequently asked questions

How much does heat pump installation cost in Hamilton?

Cold-climate heat pump installation in Hamilton starts at $5,500 for a ducted system. Ductless systems are quoted per home based on the number of indoor heads. Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements, and you get a guaranteed written quote before any work starts.

Can a heat pump heat a Hamilton century home with radiators?

Yes. A multi-zone ductless heat pump heats and cools a radiator home with no ductwork, and the boiler stays as backup for the coldest nights. Cold-climate heads keep producing heat down to -30°C.

Which heat pump rebate applies to a Hamilton home on Enbridge gas?

A gas-heated home commonly qualifies for up to $2,000 through the Home Renovation Savings Program, while electric, oil, propane or wood-heated homes can receive up to $7,500 based on size. Pre-approval must be in place before installation and program terms can change, so we confirm eligibility first. Financing runs 0% for 3, 6 or 9 months on approved credit, and the rebate comes back on top of that.

How long does a heat pump install take in Hamilton?

Most ducted and single-zone ductless installations take one working day. A multi-zone system with four or five heads often takes two. We give you the booking date once the quote is signed and, if you're using the rebate, once pre-approval comes back.

Do I need an electrical panel upgrade for a heat pump?

Not always. Many Hamilton homes on a 100 amp service have room for the dedicated 240V circuit. Our ESA-licensed electrician runs a load calculation during the quote visit, and if a panel change or a service upgrade through Alectra is needed, it goes in the written price.

Will a heat pump keep up on the Mountain or in Ancaster during a cold snap?

Yes, when it's sized from a heat-loss calculation for that part of the city. Midea EVOX G3 and Kepler units are rated to operate at -30°C, and we pair them with a furnace, boiler or electric backup for the few nights that go past the balance point.
