One town, two kinds of house: picking the right HVAC in Whitby

South Whitby has heritage homes downtown and in Port Whitby, plus plenty of 1980s to 2000s family houses. The lake takes the edge off winter here. The trouble is usually inside the walls: small or missing ducts, plaster you don't want to open, and older equipment that was never sized properly.

North Whitby is another story. Brooklin and Taunton North are full of newer homes with tight construction and decent ductwork, but they sit on open, windier ground that runs colder in January. These homes suit a ducted cold-climate heat pump, often with a furnace or electric air handler behind it.

In between sit the 1980s to 2000s homes in Rolling Acres, Blue Grass Meadows and Pringle Creek. They usually have workable ducts and an original or second-generation furnace, which makes them the simplest jobs: a two-stage furnace, a matched heat pump or AC, and a proper balance of the registers.

So we don't walk in with a favourite product. We measure, run the heat-loss numbers and look at the ducts first. Then we recommend the system that fits the house you actually live in.

  • Heritage and older homes: ductless heads, hybrid systems or a high-efficiency furnace on the ducts you have
  • Newer north-end homes: ducted heat pumps, two-stage furnaces and fresh-air ventilation
  • Every home: a written heat-loss figure, not a guess from square footage

Mismatched systems an HVAC technician in Whitby runs into

A lot of comfort problems come from the wrong equipment for the house. These are the ones we see most in Whitby.

  • The heritage house downtown has radiators and no AC

Running new ducts through finished plaster is messy and costly. Ductless heads mount on the wall, connect through a small hole, and give you cooling in summer plus efficient heat in spring and fall.

  • The Brooklin build feels stuffy and the windows fog up

Tight new homes trap moisture. We check the HRV or ERV, clean and balance it, or add one if it's missing, and set humidity so the glass stays clear.

  • Wind across the north end chills the family room every January

Open lots lose more heat on windy days. We confirm the heat loss for that room, balance the airflow and size the furnace or heat pump for the colder design temperature up there.

  • Another company quoted the same unit they'd put in any house

Size by square footage alone and you end up with short cycling or cold rooms. We use a Manual J calculation and explain why the size we picked suits your walls, windows and ducts.

  • Dry air and static shocks all winter in an older home

Older houses leak warm air and pull in dry outside air. A whole-home humidifier on the furnace, set to match the outdoor temperature, brings the moisture back without fogging the windows.

  • Your new basement suite or addition is cut off from the ducts

Stretching old ductwork rarely works well. A single-zone or multi-zone ductless system gives that space its own heating and cooling and its own controls.

  • The Williamsburg basement apartment has a tenant who wants control of their own temperature

Sharing one thermostat between two households never ends well. A ductless head in the apartment, on its own outdoor unit or as a zone of a multi-zone system, gives the tenant their own remote and keeps your upstairs setting untouched. It also means a repair on one system doesn't leave both floors without heat.

  • Sound familiar?

Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

Frequently asked questions

What type of HVAC system suits an older Whitby home?

It depends on the ducts. If the house has sound ductwork, a high-efficiency furnace or hybrid heat pump works well, and if it has radiators or no ducts, ductless heads are usually the cleanest choice.

Do new Brooklin homes need an HRV?

Many newer homes already have one, and it needs regular cleaning and balancing to work properly. If yours is missing or not doing its job, foggy windows and stale air are the usual clues.

Is a ducted heat pump a good fit for a Brooklin home?

Yes, in most cases. Newer homes there usually have tight construction and decent ducts, which is exactly what a ducted cold-climate heat pump needs to run well.

Is there a way to cool a Whitby home that heats with radiators?

Yes. Ductless mini splits add cooling to homes with hot-water radiators without new ductwork, and they also supply efficient heat in spring and fall.

Why do Whitby HVAC companies recommend different systems for the same house?

Usually because some size by square footage and some do a proper heat-loss calculation. Ask each company to show the heat-loss number behind its recommendation.

Do you offer furnace installation in Whitby with financing?

Yes. Furnace installation starts from $3,300, and you can spread it out with 0% interest for 3, 6 or 9 months or a loan from 2.99% OAC.
