Furnace Installation in Oshawa for Older Homes and Old Ductwork

Old brick, old chimneys and old ducts are our kind of job

Most HVAC calls in Oshawa's older neighbourhoods come down to three things: an aging furnace, the chimney it vents into, and ductwork that was never sized for modern equipment. We install 96% to 97% AFUE furnaces that vent out the side wall, give you a straight answer on the chimney liner question, and add heat pumps to the ducts you already have.

  • New PVC venting for high-efficiency furnaces
  • Ducts tested before we size new equipment
  • TSSA-certified gas technicians on every furnace job
  • Permits and rebate paperwork handled
  • 96% to 97%AFUE furnaces we install

Older home, older system: what an Oshawa HVAC contractor fixes

Homes near downtown and the post-war streets around them share a handful of HVAC headaches. Here is what causes each one and how we sort it out.

  • You were told the chimney needs a liner and nobody said why

When a new high-efficiency furnace stops using the chimney, the gas water heater can be left alone in a flue that is now too big for it. That can cause poor draft and condensation inside the brick. We price both fixes: a properly sized liner, or a water heater that vents out the wall so the chimney is retired.

  • The furnace is decades old and the gas bill keeps creeping up

Older mid-efficiency furnaces send a good chunk of their heat up the chimney. A two-stage, variable-speed furnace at 96% to 97% AFUE vents through PVC pipe out the side wall and needs a condensate drain, both of which we plan before install day.

  • Rooms at the end of the duct run never get warm

Old ducts are often undersized, crushed or leaking at the joints. We test static pressure, seal what we can reach and add returns where rooms are starved, so the new furnace isn't fighting the ductwork.

  • Dust puffs out of the registers when the blower starts

That usually points to open returns pulling air from the basement and a missing or poorly fitted filter. We seal the return side and install a proper filter cabinet as part of the job.

  • You want a heat pump but can't face replacing the ducts

A heat pump needs more airflow per ton than most old furnaces were designed for. We measure your ducts first, then size the heat pump to what they can carry, often as a hybrid with your furnace as backup.

  • The furnace room in the bungalow is barely bigger than the furnace

A properly sized high-efficiency furnace is often smaller in BTU than the one it replaces. We check clearances, venting routes and service access before picking the model, so it fits and stays easy to maintain.

  • The basement ceiling is finished and the trunk line is hidden behind drywall

We can still learn a lot without opening anything. Static pressure readings at the furnace and airflow at each register tell us how restricted the ducts are, and a small access panel near the trunk lets us seal the worst joints with mastic. If something can't be reached, we say so and size the equipment to the ducts as they are, rather than guessing.

  • Sound familiar?

Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

Know your Oshawa house before you buy a furnace

The age of the house decides most of the hard parts of the job. Here is what we look for.

  • HousingWartime homes to north-end subdivisions

Older brick and wartime houses near downtown, post-war bungalows, and newer homes in north-end areas like Windfields and Kedron.

  • VentingChimney or side wall

Older furnaces vent up the chimney. High-efficiency models vent through PVC pipe out the side of the house, which changes what the chimney still does.

  • UtilitiesOshawa Power and Enbridge Gas

We look at both bills before suggesting a heat pump, so the running cost comparison uses your real rates.

  • ClimateLake winds, cold winters

Wind off Lake Ontario finds every gap in an old brick wall. The heat-loss number matters far more than the square footage.

Can your old ducts carry a heat pump? What we check first

A hybrid system pairs a cold-climate heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles cooling and most of the heating, and the furnace takes over in deep cold. It is often the best way to bring an older home's gas bill down without a full rebuild.

The catch is airflow. Heat pumps move more air per ton than the furnaces many older houses started with, and tired ducts can be the bottleneck. Skip the checks and you get noise, weak heat and a system that never reaches its rating. So before we quote, our licensed refrigeration techs look at:

  • Static pressure across the existing duct system
  • Supply and return sizes against the airflow the heat pump needs
  • Whether the new coil fits the plenum above the furnace
  • Panel space for a 240V circuit
  • An outdoor spot clear of roof drip lines and the neighbour's window

How our HVAC technician in Oshawa plans a furnace upgrade

Old houses reward a careful plan. This is how we build one.

  1. 1

Look at the whole venting picture

Furnace, water heater and chimney get checked together, since changing one affects the others.

  2. 2

    Test the ducts

We measure static pressure and airflow so the new equipment is sized to what your ducts can actually deliver.

  3. 3

Price the options side by side

Furnace only, hybrid heat pump, liner or new water heater venting. Each option comes with a guaranteed price.

  4. 4

    Install, permit and register

We pull permits, run the new venting and drain, commission the system and register your warranty.

Heating and cooling in Oshawa, quoted before we touch a thing

Older homes hide surprises. That is exactly why we find them during the quote visit, not halfway through the install. Your written quote covers:

  • Furnace or heat pump model, size and efficiency rating
  • Venting route and where the pipes leave the wall
  • Condensate drain and any pump needed
  • The plan for the chimney and water heater
  • Duct sealing or added returns
  • Rebate estimate and financing options

The price on the quote is the price you pay for that scope.

Side-wall-vented furnaces and heat pumps for older Oshawa homes

Every furnace here vents through PVC out the wall, which is what raises the chimney question. The Rinnai units vent the same way, so the chimney can be retired for good.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a chimney liner when I replace my furnace in Oshawa?

Only if a gas water heater will keep using the chimney on its own. In that case a properly sized liner, or switching the water heater to side-wall venting, keeps the draft safe.

Can a high-efficiency furnace vent out the side of an older house?

Yes. Furnaces at 96% AFUE and above vent through PVC pipe out a side wall, and we plan the route to meet code clearances from windows, doors and the gas meter.

Will my old ducts work with a new heat pump?

Often they will, with some fixes. We test static pressure and duct sizes first, then size the heat pump to the airflow your ducts can deliver. Where the ducts come up short, a smaller heat pump in a hybrid setup, with the furnace covering the coldest days, usually makes more sense than tearing out ceilings.

How much does furnace installation in Oshawa cost?

Expect a starting price of $3,300 installed for a high-efficiency furnace. Venting changes, a chimney liner or duct repairs add to that, and every item is listed on a guaranteed quote.

Is a hybrid heat pump worth it in an older Oshawa home?

For many older homes it is. The heat pump covers cooling and milder heating days, the furnace handles the deep cold, and gas use drops without replacing the ductwork.

Do you do furnace repair in Oshawa outside business hours?

Yes. Emergency calls are taken evenings, weekends and holidays, and our regular hours are Monday to Saturday 8 am to 8 pm and Sunday 10 am to 5 pm.
