When it's a safety issue, leave and call

Some HVAC problems can't wait for a tech. If any of these apply, get everyone out first.

You smell gas

Rotten-egg smell near the furnace, water heater or outside meter. Don't flip switches or light anything. Leave the house, then call Enbridge's emergency line and 911 from outside. Call us once the gas is shut off.

Your CO alarm is going off

Carbon monoxide has no smell. Get everyone and pets outside, call 911, and do not go back in. A cracked heat exchanger or blocked vent is often the cause. We'll inspect and test before the furnace runs again.

Pipes at risk of freezing

If the house is dropping below 10°C with no heat, open cabinet doors under sinks, let taps drip and call us. We prioritize no-heat calls in extreme cold.

What to check before you call (two minutes, could save you a service fee)

A surprising share of the emergency calls we take turns out to be one of these. Check them in order.

  • Thermostat: is it on Heat or Cool, set above or below room temperature, and are the batteries fresh? A blank screen usually means dead batteries.
  • Breaker: find the furnace or AC breaker in the panel. If it's tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call us.
  • Furnace switch: the light-switch-style switch on or near the furnace is easy to bump off. Make sure it's on.
  • Filter: a filter packed with dust can shut a furnace down on high limit or ice up an AC coil. Replace it if it's grey and matted.
  • Condensate: a high-efficiency furnace or AC will shut off if the drain line is plugged or the pump is full. Check for standing water.
  • Gas valve: the valve on the gas line to the furnace should be in line with the pipe (open). If someone turned it off during renovations, that's your answer.
  • Outdoor unit: in summer, check the AC or heat pump outside is running and not buried in leaves. In winter, clear snow from a heat pump.

Emergency furnace and AC repair we handle after hours

  • No heat at all

Failed ignitor, dirty flame sensor, bad pressure switch or a dead control board. We carry the common parts and get most furnaces running on the first visit. Full details on furnace repair.

  • Furnace runs but blows cold air

Burners aren't lighting, or the limit switch is cutting them off because airflow is blocked. We check ignition, filter, blower and the heat exchanger.

  • AC dead or blowing warm air

Usually a failed capacitor, contactor or a refrigerant leak. We test, quote and repair on the spot where parts allow. See AC repair.

  • Heat pump stopped heating in a cold snap

Defrost board, outdoor fan motor or a sensor fault. Our refrigeration techs handle Midea, Kepler, Lennox and other inverter systems. See heat pump repair.

  • Water pouring from the furnace or indoor unit

Plugged condensate drain or a failed pump. We clear it, test it, and check for water damage to the control board.

  • Loud bang, grinding or burning smell

Shut it off at the switch and call. Could be a blower motor, inducer motor or delayed ignition, which can crack a heat exchanger.

  • Sound familiar?

Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer 24 hour HVAC service in Ontario?

EHI offers emergency HVAC repair evenings, weekends and holidays across Ontario, with same-day service in most areas. Call 1-647-694-5845 and we'll book the first available technician for your city.

What counts as an HVAC emergency?

An HVAC emergency is no heat in freezing weather, no cooling during extreme heat for someone vulnerable, a gas smell, a carbon monoxide alarm, or water pouring from the system. Gas smell and CO alarms are safety emergencies: leave the house and call 911 first.

What should I check before calling for emergency furnace repair?

Check the thermostat batteries and mode, the furnace breaker, the switch on the side of the furnace, the filter, the condensate drain and the gas valve position. If those are fine and there's still no heat, call us.

How fast can you get here for emergency AC repair?

We dispatch same-day in most of our service areas, including the GTA, Barrie, Hamilton and Kitchener-Waterloo, and offer evening, weekend and holiday slots. We'll give you an honest arrival window when you call rather than a promise we can't keep.

Is emergency furnace repair more expensive?

After-hours calls may carry an additional service charge, and we tell you that amount when you book. The repair itself is quoted in writing before work begins, the same as a daytime call.

Can you repair any brand in an emergency?

Yes. Our TSSA-certified and licensed refrigeration technicians repair furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps from Lennox, Midea, Kepler and every other major brand sold in Ontario.
