Renfrew HVAC Services That Keep Your Wood Stove or Propane as Backup

Let the heat pump do the daily work

A lot of HVAC in Renfrew and the townships around it runs on oil, propane, wood or baseboards, because the gas line doesn't reach. We add a cold-climate heat pump that carries the heating on most days, and keep the wood stove or propane furnace you already trust as backup for the deepest Valley cold. Homes heated this way can qualify for the higher rebate tier, up to $7,500.

  • Your wood stove or propane furnace stays as backup
  • Heat pumps rated to -30°C, sized from a heat-loss calculation
  • Higher rebate tier paperwork filed before the install
  • Install dates planned with you, never squeezed in

Heating a Renfrew County home off the gas line

Outside town, most homes make their own heat. That shapes every plan we put together here.

  • Common fuelsOil, propane, wood, baseboards

Rural homes in Horton, Admaston and Bonnechere often combine two of these, such as a propane furnace with a wood stove in the living room.

  • ClimateWell below -20°C

Valley cold snaps sit well below -20°C, so the heat pump needs a cold-climate rating and the backup has to be real.

  • Rebate tierUp to $7,500

Wood, propane, oil and electric heat all count toward the bigger rebate. We file the pre-approval before installing, and the rules can change.

  • SchedulingBooked with you

We set assessment and install dates with you directly, and it pays to plan before the heating season gets busy.

Heating and cooling in Renfrew: what Valley homeowners ask us to fix

Most of these come down to one heat source doing too much. A heat pump shares the load.

  • Every fall turns into a woodpile marathon

With a heat pump carrying most of the heating, the stove becomes a choice on a cold evening rather than a chore that runs all winter. You burn less wood, split less wood and still enjoy the fire.

  • Heat from the stove never reaches the back bedrooms

A stove heats the room it sits in. A ducted heat pump, or a multi-zone ductless system with a head in each bedroom, spreads even heat through the whole house.

  • Propane prices make you wince at every fill

In a hybrid setup, the heat pump runs first and the propane furnace only steps in below a switchover temperature we set. The tank lasts a lot longer between deliveries.

  • A January power outage leaves you uneasy

A heat pump runs on electricity, so we never suggest pulling out a working wood stove. Keeping it means you still have heat if an ice storm takes the power down.

  • Baseboards heat the Calabogie cottage slowly and expensively

A ductless heat pump warms the place faster on far less power, cools it in July and can hold a low setting when nobody is there.

  • You're not sure a wood-heated home counts for the rebate

Wood is one of the fuels named for the higher tier of the Home Renovation Savings Program. The heat pump must be on NRCan's qualified list, and we confirm eligibility and file pre-approval before any work starts.

  • The oil furnace is on its last legs and you'd rather not fill the tank again

A cold-climate heat pump paired with an electric air handler replaces the oil furnace outright on the ducts you already have, with electric backup strips for the deepest nights. The oil tank and its filter, lines and fill-ups go away. Oil-heated homes sit in the higher rebate tier, and the stove in the living room still stays as your outage plan.

How a Renfrew heat pump project comes together

Four steps, and your backup heat is part of the plan from the first one.

  1. 1

Tell us what heats the house

Stove, propane, oil, baseboards or a mix. Let us know the age of the house and which rooms stay cold.

  2. 2

    Size it around your backup

We calculate your heat loss, then choose a heat pump and decide how the stove or furnace fits in.

  3. 3

    Pre-approval and a written price

You get one guaranteed quote with your rebate estimate, and the rebate pre-approval goes in before installation.

  4. 4

    Installation and a walk-through

Licensed refrigeration techs install and test the system, set the switchover if there's a furnace, and show you how it all works together.

Sizing a Renfrew heat pump when the wood stove is part of the plan

A wood stove changes the sizing conversation, and it's worth getting right.

We size the heat pump to carry the whole house on an ordinary winter day, from a heat-loss calculation that counts the windows, insulation and exposure of a Valley home. We do not count the stove toward that capacity, because a stove only helps when someone is home to feed it. What the stove does change is how we handle the coldest nights. With a stove in reserve, we can skip oversizing the heat pump for the three or four deepest cold snaps a year and let the stove or the backup strips cover them.

The result is a smaller, cheaper outdoor unit that runs efficiently in the mild weather that makes up most of the heating season, and a stove you light because you want to, not because you have to.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my wood stove if I install a heat pump in Renfrew?

Yes, and we usually recommend it. The heat pump handles daily heating, and the stove stays ready for the coldest nights or a power outage.

Do wood-heated homes qualify for the higher heat pump rebate?

Homes heated by wood are part of the higher tier of the Home Renovation Savings Program, which offers up to $7,500 based on heat pump size. Before any work starts, we check your eligibility and get the pre-approval in place, because the rules are not fixed.

Can a heat pump work with my propane furnace?

Yes. In a hybrid setup the heat pump runs first, and the propane furnace takes over below a switchover temperature we set from your propane and hydro costs.

Will a heat pump heat my Renfrew home at -25°C?

A cold-climate model rated to -30°C keeps producing heat at -25°C when it's sized correctly. On colder nights, your wood stove or furnace fills the gap.

Is there an HVAC contractor in Renfrew who handles the rebate paperwork?

Our crews serve Renfrew and the surrounding townships from our office in Stouffville, and we file the rebate paperwork for you. Visit and install dates are set with you directly.

Will your crews come out to Calabogie and Burnstown?

Yes. We install ductless and ducted heat pumps for year-round homes and cottages in Calabogie, Burnstown and across the area.

What does a cold-climate heat pump cost in Renfrew?

A ducted cold-climate heat pump in Renfrew starts from $5,500 installed, before the rebate, which can reach $7,500 for homes heated by oil, propane, wood or electricity. Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements, and the quote you sign is guaranteed.
