Air conditioner problems we repair
Here is what each symptom usually means, and what our tech does about it on the first visit.
AC running but blowing warm air
Usually a low refrigerant charge, a failed outdoor fan motor, or a condenser that is not running at all. We check pressures and amp draws, find the actual fault and quote the repair on the spot.
Ice on the coil or the copper line
Ice means airflow or refrigerant. A clogged filter, a dirty evaporator coil, a dead blower or a refrigerant leak all cause it. We thaw the system, fix the cause and verify the temperature drop across the coil is back in range.
Water leaking around the furnace or air handler
Almost always a plugged condensate drain or a cracked drain pan. We clear or replace the drain, add a trap if one is missing, and check the coil for the slime that blocks lines in the first place.
Outdoor unit hums but the compressor will not start
The number one AC repair in Ontario is a failed run capacitor. It is a quick fix. If the compressor itself has failed, we test it properly before telling you, because that is the point where repair versus replace matters.
Refrigerant leak, and it needs a top-up every summer
Topping up a leaking system is a short-term patch and an expensive habit. Our refrigerant leak repair finds the leak with nitrogen pressure testing and electronic detection, repairs the joint or coil, pulls a vacuum and weighs in a fresh charge.
AC turns on and off every few minutes (short cycling)
Causes include an oversized unit, a dirty coil, a failing pressure switch or a thermostat problem. We trace it rather than guess, because short cycling wears out the compressor fast.
Loud buzzing, grinding or screeching
Buzzing points to electrical parts like contactors and capacitors. Grinding or screeching usually means a fan motor bearing. Both are repairable if caught early.
Hydro bill up, cooling down
A dirty condenser coil, low charge or a tired compressor makes the unit run longer for less cooling. A proper AC tune-up with coil cleaning often brings the bill back in line.

What our air conditioner maintenance tune-up includes
Book it each spring before the first heat wave. Annual maintenance keeps most manufacturer warranties valid and catches small faults before they become July emergencies.
- Clean the outdoor condenser coil and clear leaves, grass clippings and cottonwood fluff
- Inspect and clean the indoor evaporator coil where accessible
- Flush the condensate drain line and check the pan and trap
- Test the run capacitor, contactor and wiring connections
- Measure refrigerant pressures, superheat and subcooling, and note any sign of a leak
- Check blower motor, belt or wheel, and amp draw on the compressor and fan motors
- Measure temperature drop across the coil and check supply airflow
- Replace or check the furnace filter and calibrate the thermostat
- Written report with anything that needs attention, and the quote if something does

AC repair or replace: how we help you decide
If your central air conditioner is under 10 years old and the fix is a capacitor, contactor, fan motor or drain, repair it. Those are routine, and the unit has plenty of life left.
If the unit is 12 to 15 years old and the quote is for a compressor, an evaporator coil or a major refrigerant leak, think hard. The repair can run a third or more of a new system, and the old unit will still have its old efficiency.
At that point a cold-climate heat pump deserves a look. It cools like an AC, takes over most of your heating, and a qualifying model can return up to $7,500 through the Home Renovation Savings Program. A plain air conditioner replacement is still the right call for some homes, and we quote both without pressure.

How an EHI AC repair visit works
- 1
Call or book online
Tell us the symptom. If you have no cooling in a heat wave, or anyone in the home is vulnerable to heat, we treat it as an emergency call and get there the same day where possible.
- 2
Diagnosis
A licensed refrigeration tech tests the system, electrical and refrigerant circuit, and shows you what failed.
- 3
Written quote before work
You get the repair price in writing. If replacing makes more sense, you get that number too. Nothing is done until you say go.
- 4
Repair and test
Most common AC repairs are finished on the first visit from stock on the truck. We run the system and confirm the temperature drop before we leave.

Frequently asked questions
How much does AC repair cost in Ontario?
AC repair cost in Ontario depends on the failed part, so EHI gives you a written quote after diagnosis and before any work. A capacitor or contactor replacement is a modest repair, while a compressor or evaporator coil can approach the cost of a new system, which is when we lay out both options.
Why is my air conditioner blowing warm air?
An air conditioner blows warm air when the outdoor unit is not running, the refrigerant charge is low, the compressor has failed, or the thermostat is calling for fan only. Check the thermostat mode and the breaker first, then call us for same-day diagnosis if it is still warm.
How often should a central air conditioner be serviced?
Once a year, ideally in spring before the first heat wave. Annual air conditioner maintenance keeps most manufacturer warranties valid, catches worn capacitors and leaks early, and keeps the coils clean so the unit cools at its rated efficiency.
Can you repair a refrigerant leak or do I need a new AC?
Most refrigerant leaks can be repaired. We find the leak with nitrogen pressure testing and an electronic detector, fix the joint or section, then vacuum and recharge the system. If the leak is inside the evaporator coil on an older unit, replacing the coil or the system is often the better value.
Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old air conditioner?
It depends on the part. A capacitor, contactor or fan motor on a 15-year-old unit is usually worth fixing. A compressor or major coil repair on a unit that age is usually not, because you are putting a large sum into equipment with old efficiency and little remaining life. We quote both so the decision is yours.
Why is water leaking from my air conditioner?
Water around the furnace or air handler is almost always a clogged condensate drain line or a cracked drain pan. We clear the line, add a trap if one is missing and check the coil. Ice melting off a frozen coil also causes leaks, which points to an airflow or refrigerant problem.
Do you offer same-day AC repair?
Yes. EHI offers same-day air conditioner repair across the GTA, Markham, Oshawa, Barrie, Hamilton and most of our Ontario service area, seven days a week, with emergency service in the evenings and on holidays.
