Why Midea is our first-call cold-climate heat pump

Midea is one of the largest HVAC manufacturers in the world, and the EVOX G3 is the model they built for places like Ontario. Here's what that means in your furnace room.

It heats when it's properly cold. A Midea cold climate heat pump is rated to keep heating at -30°C and holds strong capacity at -15°C, which covers the dead of a January cold snap in most of the province. Hyper Heat and Extreme Hyper Heat are Midea's names for this low-temperature heating performance.

Inverter driven. The compressor speeds up and slows down to match your home's heat loss instead of blasting on and off. Longer, gentler cycles mean even temperatures, better dehumidification in July and less wear.

R-454B refrigerant. This is the lower global warming potential refrigerant the industry is moving to. Buying a Midea R454B heat pump now means you're not stuck with yesterday's refrigerant for the next 15 years.

It plays well with others. The EVOX G3 outdoor unit pairs with a matched Midea MAAHE or MAUHE electric air handler for an all-electric home, or with a gas furnace as a hybrid system. Either way the indoor coil is matched, which is what keeps the efficiency rating honest.

Midea heat pump sizes and the Ontario homes they suit

Midea EVOX G3 comes in five sizes. We size by a heat-loss calculation, not square footage alone, but these are fair starting points for a typical Ontario home.

Who a Midea heat pump is right for

Replacing a furnace and AC together

Gas-heated homes that want a hybrid

Pair the EVOX G3 with your existing furnace or a new Midea MGH96 or Lennox furnace. The heat pump runs most of the year and the furnace takes the coldest nights.

Problems a Midea heat pump solves

  • Your old heat pump gave up at -15°C and left the backup heat running all winter

Older heat pumps lost most of their capacity in real cold. The Midea EVOX G3 is rated to -30°C and keeps strong output at -15°C, so backup heat stays in reserve instead of running your hydro bill up.

  • The AC is dying and the furnace isn't far behind

One Midea 3 ton heat pump, for example, replaces both. You get cooling this summer and heating this winter from one install day, with one warranty registration.

  • Propane or oil heat is costing a fortune

An inverter heat pump delivers two to three units of heat per unit of electricity, even in cold weather. Switching from propane, oil or electric baseboards usually shows the biggest savings and the biggest rebate.

  • Upstairs bedrooms are hot in July and cold in January

A variable-speed Midea unit runs long, low cycles that keep air moving through the ductwork. We also check your ducts and static pressure before sizing, because a heat pump can't fix a crushed return.

  • You're worried about buying a refrigerant that's being phased out

EVOX G3 already runs on R-454B, the lower-GWP refrigerant the industry is moving to. Parts and refrigerant availability are covered for the life of the system.

  • You're not sure if your Midea model qualifies for the rebate

We check the exact model and tonnage against NRCan's qualified products list and complete pre-approval before any work starts. Confirm eligibility before installation, and keep in mind program terms can change.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Midea heat pump cost installed in Ontario?

A Midea heat pump installed by EHI starts at $5,500, and most central EVOX G3 systems land between $8,000 and $16,000 before rebates depending on size, ductwork and electrical work. The Home Renovation Savings Program can return up to $7,500 on a qualifying model, and your quote is guaranteed before we start.

Is the Midea EVOX G3 rated for Ontario winters?

Yes. The Midea EVOX G3 is ENERGY STAR cold climate certified, rated to operate at -30°C and holds strong heating capacity at -15°C. For Northern Ontario homes or anyone who wants extra backup, we pair it with a gas furnace or an air handler with electric auxiliary heat.

Is a Midea heat pump eligible for the Ontario heat pump rebate?

A Midea heat pump qualifies for the Home Renovation Savings Program when the specific model and size are on NRCan's qualified products list, and the EVOX G3 cold-climate models we install are chosen with that list in mind. Pre-approval must be in place before installation, so we confirm eligibility first and file the paperwork. Program terms can change.

What size Midea heat pump do I need, 2 ton or 3 ton or bigger?

The right Midea size comes from a heat-loss calculation of your home, not square footage alone. As a guide, a Midea 2 ton or 2.5 ton heat pump suits many bungalows and semis, a 3 ton suits a typical two-storey up to about 2,000 square feet, and larger homes need the 4 ton or 5 ton. Oversizing causes short cycling, so we measure first.

How loud is a Midea heat pump?

A Midea EVOX G3 is quiet at the low compressor speeds it runs at most of the time, with a sound closer to a modern fridge than an old AC. We place the outdoor unit away from bedroom windows and on a riser stand, which cuts vibration and keeps it clear of snow.

Who registers the Midea warranty, and can you get parts in Ontario?

We register your Midea warranty with the manufacturer as part of the install, and as an authorized dealer we have direct access to Midea parts and technical support. Extended coverage of up to 12 years parts and labour is available on select systems when registered. See our warranty page for the conditions.

What is R-454B and why does it matter?

R-454B is a lower global warming potential refrigerant that is replacing R-410A in new heat pumps and air conditioners. Midea EVOX G3 systems ship with it, which means your refrigerant and parts stay available for the life of the unit instead of being phased out.
