Most homeowners call us about furnace replacement after one of these. Here's what it means and what we do.
Gas furnaces last 15 to 20 years in Ontario. Past that, parts get scarce, efficiency drops and the heat exchanger is a growing risk. A new 96% AFUE unit uses far less gas for the same heat.
A control board one year, an inducer motor the next. When a repair passes half the cost of a new furnace, you're funding borrowed time. We quote the repair and the replacement so you can compare. Not there yet? See furnace repair.
An old single-stage 80% furnace sends 20 cents of every heating dollar up the flue. A 96% to 97% AFUE two-stage furnace keeps almost all of it in the house.
Often the furnace is the wrong size or the blower can't move air through the ducts. We size by heat loss, check static pressure, and spec a variable-speed blower that runs longer and quieter on low.
Oversized furnaces blast on and off and wear out early. A right-sized two-stage furnace runs on low fire most of the time, which is quieter, steadier and easier on parts.
A cracked heat exchanger is a replace-now situation. We install a new furnace, test for carbon monoxide, and leave you with a working CO alarm checklist.
A new furnace pairs with a cold-climate heat pump as a hybrid system. The heat pump does most of the work and the furnace handles the deep cold. It also qualifies for the Ontario rebate.
Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

Furnace installation in Ontario starts at $3,300 installed with EHI for a 96% AFUE two-stage, variable-speed gas furnace. Larger sizes, the 97% AFUE Lennox EL297V, and jobs needing new venting or ductwork cost more, and every quote is guaranteed before work starts.
If a repair costs more than half the price of a new furnace and your unit is over 12 years old, replacement is usually the better buy. A new furnace cuts gas use, comes with up to 12 years parts and labour warranty on select models, and ends the cycle of repair calls.
Furnace size depends on a heat-loss calculation, not just square footage. As a rough guide, many Ontario homes under 2,000 square feet need 45,000 to 70,000 BTU, and larger or older homes need 90,000 to 120,000 BTU. We measure before we recommend because an oversized furnace short cycles and wastes gas.
A straightforward gas furnace replacement takes four to eight hours, so you have heat the same day. Jobs that need new venting routes, duct modifications or a gas line upgrade can run into a second day.
Lennox and Midea both make condensing, two-stage, variable-speed furnaces that handle Ontario winters well. The Lennox EL297V is the quietest and most efficient at 97% AFUE, the Lennox ML296V is the best-value 96% option, and the Midea MGH96 at 96.5% is a strong match for a Midea heat pump hybrid.
A gas furnace on its own does not currently qualify for the Home Renovation Savings Program. Pairing it with a cold-climate heat pump as a hybrid system can qualify for up to $2,000 for Enbridge gas-heated homes. See our Ontario rebate guide.
