Heat pumps with a backup plan for when it really bites
HVAC in Timmins has to be planned for nights that drop toward -35°C, which is colder than any heat pump is rated for. So we build every system with dependable backup heat: a cold-climate heat pump rated to -30°C does most of the work, and a furnace or electric air handler covers the rest. Sizing comes from a careful heat-loss calculation, and the outdoor unit goes where snow can't bury it.

In a place this cold, small design mistakes show up fast. These are the ones we fix most.
Below its rated range, any heat pump loses ground. We size the backup heat to cover the gap, so a -35°C night means the furnace or heat strips step in and the house stays warm.
Electric heat strips are simple but costly to run for long stretches. Depending on your fuel, keeping a propane, oil or gas furnace as the backup can be cheaper. We compare both for your home.
We set it on a raised stand or wall bracket, out from under the eaves and away from where the plow piles snow, so air can always reach the coil.
Heat pumps melt frost off the coil several times a day in winter. A raised stand over a drained base lets that water get away instead of building ice that lifts and damages the unit.
Old furnaces were often oversized, and a heat pump sized the same way will short cycle. We run a heat-loss calculation for your actual walls, windows and attic.
Replace it with a cold-climate heat pump and an electric air handler, or keep it as backup in a hybrid setup. Oil-heated homes can qualify for the higher rebate tier.
On a -35°C night, it is. The backup is doing the job it was sized for, and the heat pump will take over again when the cold eases. If the backup is running on a -10°C afternoon, the switchover point or an outdoor sensor is off, and we adjust it. We set that point from your fuel costs and heat loss, so the cheaper source runs whenever it can.
Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.
In Timmins the backup heat is part of the system, not an extra, so our quotes price the heat pump and the furnace or air handler together as one number.

Every recommendation we make here starts with the same four realities.
Some of the coldest winters in the province mean backup heat is part of the plan from day one, not an add-on.
Many homes in town and in Schumacher heat with oil, propane or electricity. Enbridge Gas serves parts of the area.
Older homes in Porcupine, Schumacher and around town vary a lot in insulation, so a heat-loss calculation matters more than square footage.
Homes heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood can qualify for the higher amount. Pre-approval comes before installation.
A cold-climate heat pump is an electric system that pulls heat from outdoor air even in serious cold. The Midea EVOX G3 and Kepler units we install are rated to heat down to -30°C. That covers most of a Timmins winter, but not all of it.
A hybrid system closes that gap. The heat pump runs for the bulk of the season, and when the temperature falls past the point where it can keep up, a furnace or electric heat takes over automatically. You stay warm, and you burn fuel only on the nights that truly need it.

Four steps, built around the cold.
Call or send the form. Tell us what heats the house now, how old it is and where the cold spots are.
We calculate the heat your home needs on a design cold day, then choose the heat pump and the backup that covers the rest.
We pick a snow-safe spot for the outdoor unit and send one written price, with your rebate estimate. Pre-approval goes in first.
Licensed refrigeration and TSSA-certified gas techs install and test the system, set the switchover and register your warranty.

Replaces our AC with a new heat pump in Ottawa and the whole experience was outstanding. From the first call, Dustin was incredibly responsive and communicated clearly every step of the way. He cut through all the usual sales fluff and got straight to what mattered — options, costs, timelines, and what made the most sense for our home. They addressed every concern I had, explained the details discussed my technical questions, and handled the installation quickly and professionally. The quality of the work is excellent, everything was done cleanly, and the system has been running perfectly since. Pricing was fair and transparent, and there were no surprises. It’s rare to find a company that combines speed, honesty, and solid workmanship like this. Highly recommended.
Efficient Home Improvements truly went above and beyond. Our furnace failed on Christmas Eve in Ottawa, and their team stayed up late (3:00am) that night to replace it. Their responsiveness, professionalism, and dedication during the holidays were exceptional. The work was completed efficiently, and everything was explained clearly. It’s rare to find a company willing to sacrifice their own holiday time to ensure a customer’s home is warm and safe. I highly recommend Efficient Home improvements to anyone in need of reliable and compassionate service.
We had a heat pump/AC unit installed by EHI, on time, on budget, great workmanship. Julian and team were knowledgeable and courteous. Dustin communicated well and is managing our government rebate for the new efficient system. Thank you Team!

Dustin and his team were really responsive and helpful in getting us a new heat pump to replace our broken AC unit. The team went above and beyond helping us through the process and answering other questions about the house we recently moved in to. Below its rated range a heat pump's output falls, so backup heat takes over automatically. That's why every system we plan in Timmins includes a furnace or electric air handler sized to carry the house on the coldest nights.
It depends on your current fuel and costs. Homes with a furnace still in good shape often do best with a hybrid, while homes leaving oil entirely often choose a heat pump with an electric air handler.
High enough to clear your typical snow depth and drifts, which we check on site. Most installs here use a raised stand or wall bracket, placed away from roof edges.
Yes. Oil-heated homes can qualify for up to $7,500 toward a cold-climate heat pump through the Home Renovation Savings Program, based on size. The pre-approval has to be in place before we install, and the program's terms may change.
Yes. Our crews install cold-climate heat pumps and hybrid systems in Timmins and nearby communities, and we schedule the work with you directly.
Often, yes. If your furnace is in good working order, we can connect it to the heat pump as backup and set the switchover point, which keeps the upfront cost down.
The heat pump side starts from $5,500 installed and a new high-efficiency furnace from $3,300, before any rebate. If your existing furnace is sound, it can serve as the backup, which keeps the total down. Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements, and the quote is guaranteed in writing.
