Pickering homes at a glance, and what they need

Pickering has some of the newest homes in Durham Region and some of the oldest along the lake. Both can end up with a heat pump, for different reasons.

  • Housing mixSeaton new builds to 1960s Bay Ridges

Newer homes in Duffin Heights and Seaton often have good ducts and builder-basic equipment. Older Bay Ridges homes tend to have aging AC and long-serving furnaces.

  • UtilitiesElexicon Energy and Enbridge Gas

Before we suggest going electric, we look at your Elexicon rates and your Enbridge gas use, so the savings estimate fits your house.

  • WeatherLake humidity, cold winter wind

Summer air off Lake Ontario is heavy with moisture, and winter wind off the water pulls heat out of the house. Equipment has to handle both.

  • Rebate tierUp to $7,500

Electric, oil or propane heat qualifies for the higher amount. Gas-heated homes usually get a smaller one, commonly up to $2,000.

Calls a Pickering HVAC technician gets every season

New house or old, these are the issues that bring Pickering homeowners to us. Each one has a practical fix.

  • Your Bay Ridges air conditioner is older than your kids

Many of these units still run on R-22, a refrigerant that is no longer made, so even a small leak gets expensive. We replace the old condenser with a cold-climate heat pump that cools all summer and heats most of the winter, reusing your ducts when they test sound.

  • Your new Seaton home came with a basic furnace and no AC

Builder packages often skip cooling entirely. We add a ducted heat pump to the existing furnace and ductwork, which gives you air conditioning now and a lower gas bill in the shoulder seasons.

  • You want to move off gas, just not all at once

We plan it in stages. Start with a hybrid system that keeps the furnace as backup, then switch to an electric air handler paired with a Midea EVOX G3 heat pump when the furnace reaches the end of its life.

  • Your electrical panel has no space for a heat pump circuit

A ducted heat pump needs its own 240V circuit. Our ESA-licensed electrical work covers the new breaker, the disconnect and a panel upgrade if your load calls for one, all on the same quote.

  • Summer air indoors feels damp and sticky

An oversized single-stage AC cools the air fast and shuts off before it pulls the moisture out. An inverter heat pump runs longer at low speed, which dries the air and keeps lakeshore humidity in check.

  • You doubt a heat pump can handle February wind off the lake

Fair question. Cold-climate models are rated down to -30°C and keep strong capacity at -15°C. We size from a heat-loss calculation and plan backup heat for the coldest nights, so you never rely on a guess.

  • The Bay Ridges basement took on water once, and the furnace sits right on the slab

A furnace that's been through a wet basement can hide rust in the burner box and the blower housing. When it's time to replace it, we set the new furnace on a raised base, fit a float switch on the condensate pump so a backed-up drain shuts the AC off instead of flooding, and keep the heat pump's indoor coil well above the floor.

  • Sound familiar?

Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

How an HVAC contractor in Pickering should plan your heat pump

A good heat pump job is mostly planning. Here is the order we do it in.

  1. 1

    Share the basics

Age, size, what heats it now and what bugs you about it. A photo of your furnace label and electrical panel helps a lot.

  2. 2

    Heat loss and electrical check

We run a Manual J heat-loss calculation, test the ducts and confirm your panel can carry a 240V heat pump circuit.

  3. 3

    Pre-approval and a fixed price

You get a guaranteed quote with your rebate estimate. We file the rebate pre-approval before installation, as the program requires.

  4. 4

    Install and setup

Our licensed refrigeration techs install and commission the system, set the switchover point with you and register the warranty.

Going all-electric in Pickering, one stage at a time

Plenty of Pickering homeowners want to end up without a gas line but don't want to replace a working furnace to get there. The staged route works like this.

  • Stage one: the old AC comes out and a cold-climate heat pump goes in on the existing furnace and ducts. The heat pump cools in summer and heats through spring, fall and mild winter days, and the furnace covers deep cold.
  • Stage two: when the furnace reaches the end of its life, it's replaced by an electric air handler with backup heat strips. The heat pump and ducts stay exactly where they are.
  • Along the way: the 240V circuit for the heat pump goes in at stage one, and we size the panel work so stage two needs no second electrical upgrade.

Stage one may qualify for the gas-home rebate tier, commonly up to $2,000, and we file the pre-approval before installation. Stage two is a straight equipment swap with no refrigerant work, which keeps that second visit short.

Frequently asked questions

Should I replace my old AC in Pickering with a heat pump?

In most cases, yes, if the AC is near the end of its life. A cold-climate heat pump costs a bit more than a plain AC but also heats your home for much of the winter, and it may qualify for a rebate.

Can a heat pump be the only heat in a new Seaton home?

Often it can, when the house is well built and the heat pump is sized from a proper heat-loss calculation. We pair it with an electric air handler that has backup heat strips for the coldest nights.

Do I need a panel upgrade for a heat pump in Pickering?

Not always. Many homes have room for the 240V circuit a heat pump needs, and we check your panel and load before quoting so any upgrade is priced up front.

How does the rebate work for a gas-heated Pickering home?

Homes heated with Enbridge gas usually qualify for a smaller rebate, commonly up to $2,000, under the Home Renovation Savings Program. Program terms can change, and pre-approval has to be done before the install, so we confirm eligibility first.

Can I keep my furnace and still add a heat pump?

Yes. That setup is called a hybrid system, and it lets the heat pump handle most of the year while the furnace takes over in deep cold.

Is a Pickering HVAC technician available on Sundays?

Yes. We are open Sunday 10 am to 5 pm, Monday to Saturday 8 am to 8 pm, and we take emergency calls evenings, weekends and holidays.

How much does it cost to replace an old AC with a heat pump in Pickering?

A ducted cold-climate heat pump in Pickering starts from $5,500 installed, before any rebate. A plain central air conditioner is priced by written quote after a heat-gain calculation. Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements, including any 240V circuit work, and the quote is guaranteed.
