HVAC repair problems we fix every week
Here's what you notice, what's usually behind it, and what we do about it.
No heat, or the furnace blows cold air
Often a failed ignitor, a dirty flame sensor, a tripped limit switch or a clogged filter choking airflow. We test the ignition sequence, clean or replace the part, and check gas pressure before we leave. More on our furnace repair page.
Furnace or heat pump turns on and off every few minutes
Short cycling is usually a dirty filter, a blocked coil, an oversized system or a bad thermostat. We find the cause instead of resetting the board and hoping.
AC runs constantly but the house never cools
Low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty outdoor coil or a weak capacitor are the usual suspects. We check pressures, find the leak and repair it properly rather than just topping up. See AC repair and maintenance.
Ice on the AC line or the heat pump coil
Ice means poor airflow or low charge. Running it iced up can kill the compressor. We shut it down, find the cause and fix it before restarting.
Water around the furnace or indoor unit
A plugged condensate drain or a cracked trap on a high-efficiency furnace, AC coil or heat pump. We clear the line, replace the trap if needed and check the pump.
Heat pump isn't keeping up in a cold snap
Could be a defrost problem, a refrigerant issue or a thermostat set to the wrong mode. Our heat pump repair techs are trained on Midea, Kepler and Lennox inverter systems.
Banging, squealing or rattling you didn't hear last year
Blower motor bearings, a loose belt, a cracked heat exchanger or a failing inducer motor. Some of these are safety issues, so we check the heat exchanger for cracks and test for carbon monoxide.
Error code on the furnace or thermostat
Flashing LED codes point us to the circuit. We read the code, confirm the fault with meter readings, and quote the repair in writing before touching anything.

What's in an EHI HVAC maintenance plan
An annual furnace tune-up in fall and an AC or heat pump tune-up in spring. Ontario winters are hard on equipment, and most manufacturers require proof of maintenance to keep extended warranties valid, so the visit pays for itself twice.
- Clean and inspect burners, flame sensor and ignitor; test ignition and flame rollout safety
- Inspect heat exchanger for cracks and test for carbon monoxide at the registers
- Check gas pressure, temperature rise and limit switch operation
- Test blower motor amperage, capacitor and belt; clean the blower wheel if needed
- Clear condensate drain and trap; inspect the condensate pump
- Clean outdoor AC or heat pump coil; check refrigerant pressures and superheat/subcooling
- Tighten electrical connections, test contactor and capacitor, check the disconnect
- Calibrate thermostat, replace filter, and record readings for your warranty file

How HVAC repair works with EHI
- 1
Call or book online
Tell us the symptom and your city. We book same-day in most areas, with evening and weekend slots when you need them.
- 2
Diagnosis
A licensed tech runs the system, reads codes, tests components with a meter and finds the root cause, not just the part that failed last.
- 3
Written quote before work
You get the repair price in writing. If the system is near end of life, you'll also get a replacement option so you can compare.
- 4
Repair and test
Most repairs are done on the first visit from stocked parts. We run a full cycle and check safety controls before we leave.

Repair or replace? Here's how we call it
A good rule: if the repair costs more than half of a new system and the equipment is over 12 years old, replacement wins. In an Ontario climate, a new 96% AFUE furnace or a cold-climate heat pump cuts running costs enough that the math usually favours it.
Repair makes sense when the system is under 10 years old, the fault is a single part like a capacitor, ignitor or motor, and the heat exchanger and compressor are healthy. We'll tell you which side of the line you're on, and the choice stays yours.

Frequently asked questions
How much does HVAC repair cost in Ontario?
HVAC repair cost in Ontario depends on the part and the system. Small fixes like a capacitor, flame sensor or ignitor are at the low end; blower motors, control boards and refrigerant leak repairs cost more. EHI quotes every repair in writing after diagnosis, so you know the price before we start.
Do you offer same-day HVAC repair?
Yes. EHI offers same-day HVAC repair in most of our Ontario service areas, including Toronto, Markham, Richmond Hill, Barrie and Oshawa, with evening and weekend appointments. For no-heat and no-cooling situations, see our emergency HVAC service.
How often should HVAC maintenance be done?
HVAC maintenance should be done once a year per system: a furnace tune-up in fall and an AC or heat pump tune-up in spring. A heat pump that heats and cools year-round benefits from two visits.
Does skipping maintenance void my warranty?
It can. Most manufacturers, including Lennox and Midea, require documented annual maintenance to honour extended parts and labour coverage. We record readings at every visit so your warranty file is complete.
Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old furnace?
Usually not if the repair is major. At 15 years a furnace is near the end of its life, and a cracked heat exchanger or failed control board costs a large share of a new 96% AFUE unit. For a minor part on an otherwise healthy furnace, a repair can still buy a few more winters.
What does an HVAC tune-up include?
An EHI tune-up includes cleaning burners and the flame sensor, inspecting the heat exchanger, testing gas pressure and safety controls, checking blower amperage and the capacitor, clearing the condensate drain, cleaning the outdoor coil, checking refrigerant pressures and calibrating the thermostat.
Do you repair heat pumps and ductless mini-splits?
Yes. Our licensed refrigeration techs repair ducted and ductless heat pumps from Midea, Kepler, Lennox and other brands. See ductless mini-split repair for wall-mounted systems.
