Kenora Heating and Cooling That Looks After the Cottage While You're Away

Ductless heat, remote alerts and a plan made well ahead

HVAC in Kenora covers two very different jobs: year-round homes in town, and cottages on Lake of the Woods that sit empty for weeks at a time. We install ductless heat pumps that heat and cool both, set them up to look after a place while you're away, and plan installs well ahead so the work fits the season and your calendar.

  • Ductless heat pumps for cottages and year-round homes
  • Smart thermostats that alert you if the temperature drops
  • Installs booked well ahead, never rushed
  • Higher rebate tier for eligible homes on electric, oil, propane or wood heat

Kenora cottage and home facts we plan around

A Lake of the Woods property brings its own set of questions. These four shape every plan we make here.

  • On the lakeCottages and lakefront homes

Many properties sit right on the water, some well off the main road. We sort out access, placement and timing during planning, not on install day.

  • OccupancyEmpty for weeks at a time

A place that sits empty needs heat that runs on its own, holds a safe low setting and tells you when something's wrong.

  • UtilitiesSynergy North and Enbridge Gas

Synergy North supplies hydro in Kenora, and Enbridge Gas serves parts of the area. Many cottages run on electric heat or propane.

  • ClimateLong Northwestern winters

Northwestern Ontario cold calls for a cold-climate heat pump rated to -30°C and a backup heat source for the deepest stretches.

Kenora HVAC problems we solve for cottages and homes

Most of these come from one fact: lake properties don't get used the way town homes do.

  • Baseboards keep the empty cottage above freezing, at a painful cost

A ductless heat pump holds a low setting on far less electricity than baseboards, and many models have a low-temperature heating mode built for buildings nobody is using.

  • Frozen pipes keep you up at night when the cottage is empty

A heat pump alone isn't a freeze-protection plan. We pair it with backup heat and a smart thermostat that sends an alert if the temperature drops, so you or a neighbour can act.

  • The cottage bakes in July with the sun off the water

A ductless heat pump cools and pulls moisture out of the air, so the bedrooms are comfortable at night without window units rattling away.

  • Musty, damp air greets you when you open the place in spring

Holding a low, steady heat through the shoulder seasons and running the dry mode in summer keeps humidity down, and an HRV can bring in fresh air.

  • The outdoor unit near the shore takes a beating from wind and snow

We mount it on a solid stand or wall bracket on the sheltered side of the building, above typical snow depth and away from roof edges.

  • Every installer is booked solid by the time you get to the lake

Plan a season ahead. We can do the assessment and quote early, file rebate pre-approval where you're eligible, and book the install for a time that suits you.

  • The cottage panel is small and the hydro run from the road is long

A ductless heat pump needs its own 240V circuit, and an older 60 or 100 amp cottage panel may not have room. We check the panel and the load during planning. Inverter units draw far less at start-up than a baseboard bank, and our ESA-licensed electrical work covers the breaker, disconnect and any panel upgrade in the same quote.

Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

How we plan a Kenora install well ahead

Four steps, spaced out so nothing gets rushed.

  1. 1

    Reach out early

Tell us about the property, how often it's used and what heats it now. The earlier in the year, the more choice you have on dates.

  2. 2

    Photos and assessment

Photos of the panel, walls and outdoor spaces help us plan, then a visit confirms sizing, placement and access.

  3. 3

    Quote, pre-approval and a date

You get one guaranteed price, rebate pre-approval goes in where eligible, and we book an install date with you.

  4. 4

Install and set up for empty weeks

We install, commission and set the low-heat mode and alerts, then show you how to check on the place from home.

Ductless heads and cold-climate units that suit Lake of the Woods

For a cottage, a single wall head is often enough. For a year-round home in Keewatin or Norman, a ducted cold-climate unit carries the whole house. These are the models we install.

Opening and closing a Kenora cottage once a heat pump is in

A heat pump changes the spring and fall routine a little, mostly for the better.

In spring, rinse the outdoor coil gently with a hose to clear pollen and winter grit, check that nothing has nested in the cabinet, and run the unit in cooling for a few minutes to confirm the drain is clear. In fall, set the low-heat mode, confirm the thermostat alert is sending to your phone, and make sure the backup heat is switched on and ready.

If you'd rather not do any of that, book a yearly service. A licensed technician checks the refrigerant charge, the defrost cycle, the drain and the electrical connections, which is the best way to catch a problem before the place sits empty for a month.

Frequently asked questions

Will a ductless unit keep a Kenora cottage warm through January?

Yes, when it's a cold-climate model rated to -30°C and sized for the building. For a cottage used in winter, we still recommend a backup heat source for the coldest stretches.

What temperature should I leave an empty cottage at?

Keep it warm enough that pipes in outside walls stay safe, which for most cottages means somewhere in the low teens Celsius. Pair that with backup heat and a temperature alert.

How far ahead should I book heat pump installation in Kenora?

As early as you can, ideally a season ahead. That leaves time for the assessment, rebate pre-approval where eligible and an install date that suits you.

Do Kenora cottages qualify for heat pump rebates?

It depends on the property and the program rules, so we confirm eligibility before installation. For eligible homes heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood, the higher tier offers up to $7,500, and program terms can change.

Can I check on my cottage heat remotely?

Yes, with a smart thermostat or a Wi-Fi control that works with your system. You can see the indoor temperature, change the setting and get an alert if it drops.

Do your crews cover Keewatin and Jaffray Melick?

Yes. Our crews serve Keewatin, Jaffray Melick, Kenora town and properties around Lake of the Woods, and we schedule installs with you well ahead.

How much does a ductless heat pump cost for a Kenora cottage?

A single-zone ductless system for a Kenora cottage is priced by written quote once we've seen the building, because the number of heads, the line set length and access to the property all change the figure. A ducted cold-climate heat pump for a year-round home starts from $5,500 installed, and installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements.
