Air conditioning problems a new central AC fixes

Most air conditioner replacement calls start with one of these. Here is what is usually behind it, and what we do.

  • Your AC is 15 years old and the repair quote is scary

Once a compressor or evaporator coil fails on an older unit, the repair often costs a third of a new system. We give you both numbers, repair and replace, so you can decide with real figures. See our AC repair and maintenance page if you want to try a fix first.

  • The upstairs bedrooms never cool down

Nine times out of ten the old unit was sized off square footage, or the ductwork starves the second floor. We run a heat-gain calculation, check static pressure in the ducts, and often recommend a two-stage or variable-speed system that runs longer at low speed and pushes cool air where it is needed.

  • Your hydro bill jumps every summer

A unit from the early 2000s can use far more electricity per hour of cooling than a current model. SEER2 is the rating that matters. The higher the number, the less hydro you burn for the same cooling.

  • The outdoor unit rattles loud enough to bother the neighbours

Worn compressor mounts and tired fan motors get loud. New Lennox and Midea condensers run quietly enough that you forget they are there, which your neighbours will appreciate too.

  • The AC died in a heat wave and you have no cooling

We carry common sizes and can often replace a central air conditioner within days, not weeks. Call 1-647-694-5845 and we will give you the soonest install date.

  • You are wondering if a heat pump makes more sense

It often does. A cold-climate heat pump cools exactly like an AC and also heats your home, and a qualifying model can bring back up to $7,500 through the Home Renovation Savings Program. Read about heat pump installation before you buy a plain AC.

  • Someone quoted you a new condenser without touching the furnace coil

The evaporator coil inside your furnace must match the new outdoor unit, or you lose efficiency and risk the warranty. Every EHI air conditioner installation includes a matched coil and a new line set where needed.

How central AC installation works with EHI

  1. 1

    Free assessment and guaranteed quote

We look at your furnace, ductwork, electrical panel and the spot for the outdoor unit. Most homeowners have a guaranteed price the same day.

  2. 2

    Sizing and equipment match

The heat-gain calculation sets the tonnage. Then we match the condenser, coil and blower so the system actually hits its SEER2 rating in your house.

  3. 3

    Install day

A typical central air conditioner replacement takes four to six hours. New installs with a new line set and electrical take most of a day.

  4. 4

    Commissioning and hand-over

We check superheat and subcooling, measure temperature drop across the coil, test the drain and show you the thermostat. Then we clean up.

  5. 5

    Paperwork

Warranty registration is done for you. If you chose a heat pump, we also file the rebate documents.

SEER2, R-454B and the matched coil: what actually decides how your AC performs

SEER2 is the seasonal efficiency rating every new air conditioner sold in Canada carries. It replaced SEER with a tougher test that better reflects real ductwork. A higher SEER2 means lower hydro bills for the same cooling.

R-454B is the low-global-warming-potential refrigerant in the current generation of equipment, including the Midea EVOX G3. It needs properly rated line sets and tools, which is why licensed refrigeration techs should do the work.

The matched coil is the part most homeowners never see. The evaporator coil inside your furnace has to be sized and rated for the new outdoor unit. Mismatched coils are the most common reason a brand-new AC underperforms.

A cold-climate heat pump replaces your air conditioner and takes over most of your heating, and a qualifying model can bring back up to $7,500 through the Home Renovation Savings Program (up to $2,000 for Enbridge gas-heated homes). A plain AC does not qualify. 0% financing for 3, 6 or 9 months is available on either.

Frequently asked questions

How much does central air conditioner installation cost in Ontario?

Central air conditioner installation cost in Ontario depends on tonnage, efficiency level, and whether your line set, coil and electrical can be reused, so EHI quotes each home with a guaranteed final price. As a comparison, a cold-climate heat pump that cools like an AC and also heats starts at $5,500 installed, and may qualify for a rebate that a plain AC does not.

What size air conditioner do I need?

The right size comes from a heat-gain calculation, not square footage alone. As a rough guide, many Ontario homes up to about 2,000 square feet land in the 2 to 3 ton range, and larger two-storey homes often need 3.5 to 5 ton. An oversized AC short cycles and leaves the house clammy, so we measure before we recommend.

Should I replace my AC with a heat pump?

For most Ontario homes with ductwork, yes, it is worth a serious look. A cold-climate heat pump provides the same cooling as a central AC, heats your home for most of the winter, and qualifying models can return up to $7,500 through the Home Renovation Savings Program. We will quote both options side by side.

How long does AC installation take?

A straight central air conditioner replacement usually takes four to six hours. A first-time installation with a new line set, coil and 240V circuit takes most of one day.

What does SEER2 mean on a new air conditioner?

SEER2 is the seasonal energy efficiency ratio measured under the updated test procedure that reflects real-world ductwork. A higher SEER2 number means the unit delivers more cooling per kilowatt-hour, which shows up as a lower summer hydro bill.

Do I need a new coil on my furnace when I replace the AC?

Yes, in almost every case. The evaporator coil must match the capacity and refrigerant of the new outdoor unit, or the system will not reach its rated efficiency and the manufacturer may not honour the warranty. EHI includes a matched coil in every air conditioner replacement.

Can you install an air conditioner in a house with no ducts?

Yes. A ductless mini-split or multi-zone system cools and heats rooms without any ductwork, which suits bungalows with baseboard heat, additions and condos. See our ductless mini-split installation page for options and pricing.
