Heat that keeps up when northern Muskoka turns bitter
HVAC in Huntsville gets tested harder than it does further south. Northern Muskoka runs colder and snowier, and a lakefront home on Fairy, Peninsula or Vernon Lake takes the wind straight off the ice. Our heat pumps are rated to -30°C, and we pair each one with a second heat source for the nights that dip lower. For the bunkie, the boathouse loft or the new addition, a small ductless system does the job.

Huntsville winters find the weak spot in any system. These are the ones we fix most often.
Big windows facing open water lose heat fast, and wind pushes cold air through every gap. We size the system from a heat-loss calculation that counts glass area and exposure, then place heads or registers to cover those walls.
On the deepest cold days, steady running is normal for an inverter heat pump. If the house still loses ground, the backup isn't set right or the unit is undersized. We check both and adjust the switchover.
A small single-zone ductless heat pump heats a bunkie through the shoulder seasons and cools it in July. It needs a 240V circuit and a short line set, and no ductwork at all.
Stretching old ducts to an addition rarely works well. A dedicated ductless head gives that space its own heat, cooling and thermostat.
We set it on a tall stand or a wall bracket, well above the depth your yard usually sees, and away from the eaves so falling snow and ice miss it.
A cold-climate heat pump takes most of the load and leaves the furnace as backup. If the lake house runs on propane, oil, wood or electric heat, it's in line for the larger rebate.
A heat pump can sit idle through winter, but it should be shut down properly. We show you how to switch it off at the disconnect, clear the condensate line so nothing freezes and splits, and leave the outdoor unit covered against snow load without blocking it. In spring, a quick check before the first run catches anything the winter did.
Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.
A bunkie ductless system and a whole-house hybrid sit at very different price points. Here is where each one starts, with the backup heat priced in the same quote.

Four local realities shape almost every system we design here.
Colder on design days than the south end of Muskoka, with snow that lingers on the ground longer.
Houses in town, lakefront homes and cottages on Fairy, Peninsula and Vernon lakes, and rural properties toward Utterson and Novar.
We check your panel for space and capacity before adding a heat pump, and plan a panel upgrade if it's needed.
Lake and rural homes without natural gas may see as much as $7,500. We file pre-approval before any install.
A heat pump's rating tells you the coldest temperature it can still produce heat at. Our Midea EVOX G3 and Kepler units carry a -30°C heating rating. In northern Muskoka, some winters bring nights near or past that, so a rating alone isn't a plan.
The plan is a heat pump sized to carry most of the season, plus a backup sized to carry the whole house if it has to. In a home with a good furnace, the furnace becomes the backup. In an all-electric home, an electric air handler with heat strips does the job. Either way, the switch happens on its own and you stay warm.
Bunkies and additions are simpler. A single-zone ductless system handles one space, and the main house's system doesn't have to change at all.

Four steps from first call to a system that's ready for February.
Main house, bunkie, addition or all three. Tell us how it's heated today and which spaces you use in winter.
We measure each space, look at glass facing the lake and plan output for the coldest days, not average ones.
You get the heat pump, the backup and the placement in one guaranteed price, with your rebate estimate. Pre-approval is filed first.
Our licensed techs install and commission everything, set the switchover point and register your warranty.

We had a heat pump/AC unit installed by EHI, on time, on budget, great workmanship. Julian and team were knowledgeable and courteous. Dustin communicated well and is managing our government rebate for the new efficient system. Thank you Team!
Replaces our AC with a new heat pump in Ottawa and the whole experience was outstanding. From the first call, Dustin was incredibly responsive and communicated clearly every step of the way. He cut through all the usual sales fluff and got straight to what mattered — options, costs, timelines, and what made the most sense for our home. They addressed every concern I had, explained the details discussed my technical questions, and handled the installation quickly and professionally. The quality of the work is excellent, everything was done cleanly, and the system has been running perfectly since. Pricing was fair and transparent, and there were no surprises. It’s rare to find a company that combines speed, honesty, and solid workmanship like this. Highly recommended.
Recently got a shiny new heat pump installed. Went very well, nice unit and it works soooo quietly. These fine folks were very easy to deal with, professional and thourough. Would highly recommend.
Efficient Home Improvements truly went above and beyond. Our furnace failed on Christmas Eve in Ottawa, and their team stayed up late (3:00am) that night to replace it. Their responsiveness, professionalism, and dedication during the holidays were exceptional. The work was completed efficiently, and everything was explained clearly. It’s rare to find a company willing to sacrifice their own holiday time to ensure a customer’s home is warm and safe. I highly recommend Efficient Home improvements to anyone in need of reliable and compassionate service.
I recently had a new furnace and tankless water heater installed by this company. Excellent service by both office and technicians , I highly recommend!

Had a tankless water heater installed and couldn’t be happier. The installation was quick, professional, and the system works great — endless hot water and more efficient than my old tank. Highly recommend!
Dustin and his team were really responsive and helpful in getting us a new heat pump to replace our broken AC unit. The team went above and beyond helping us through the process and answering other questions about the house we recently moved in to. I would highly recommend Efficient Home Improvements for any of your HVAC needs.

It will still be making heat at -30°C, but up here we never let it work without a safety net. On the coldest nights the backup takes over automatically, so the house stays warm.
Most bunkies need a small single-zone ductless unit, but the right size depends on the floor area, insulation and windows. We size it from a quick heat-loss check rather than a guess.
Yes. A ductless heat pump needs a dedicated 240V circuit, and we check whether your panel or the bunkie's sub-panel has room for it.
A furnace that still has years left makes an easy backup in a hybrid setup. Homes with no furnace worth keeping usually go with an electric air handler that has heat strips inside.
Yes. We install at lakefront homes and cottages around Huntsville, and we plan placement around wind, snow and access on the site visit.
We handle oil-to-heat-pump switches for Huntsville homes from our base in Stouffville. If your home burns oil now, it may qualify for up to $7,500, provided pre-approval comes before the install.
A ducted cold-climate heat pump starts from $5,500 installed, and a single-zone ductless unit for a bunkie or addition is quoted in writing after we see the space. Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements, especially the line-set run and the backup heat, and the quote is guaranteed.
