Heat Pump Installation in Toronto for Tight Lots and Old Houses

Sized for your heat loss, placed for your lot, quiet for your neighbours

Heat pump installation in Toronto is a different job than it is in a new subdivision. The house might be a 1910 semi with radiators, the side yard might be a metre wide, and the panel might already be full. We plan around all of that before we quote, and the price we give you is the price you pay.

  • Midea EVOX G3 and Kepler cold-climate models rated to -30°C
  • Placement planned for narrow side yards, laneways and flat roofs
  • ESA-licensed 240V circuit and panel work included in the quote
  • Rebate pre-approval filed before install day

Heat pump installation problems Toronto houses throw at us

Most of these come up on the first site visit. None of them stop a good install, but every one of them changes the plan.

  • Your side yard is barely a metre wide

A standard condenser pad will not fit, and the neighbour's wall is right there. We use a wall bracket to lift the outdoor unit off the ground, or we place it in the rear yard or on a flat roof where the structure and your building rules allow. The line set gets routed along the brick in a cover, not across a window.

  • The house has radiators and no ducts at all

Plenty of Annex and Riverdale homes never had a furnace. A multi-zone ductless system puts a quiet wall head in each main room with one outdoor unit, or a slim ducted air handler in the attic or basement feeds short duct runs. Either way, you keep the radiators as backup and gain cooling you never had.

  • Baseboard heat in a condo townhouse and a Toronto Hydro bill that stings

Electric baseboards give you one unit of heat per unit of hydro. A cold-climate heat pump gives you two to three in mild weather, and because the home is heated by electricity it sits in the top rebate tier, up to $7,500. We also help with the placement request your property manager will want.

  • The furnace is 20 years old and the AC died last August

One cold-climate heat pump replaces both. If you are on Enbridge gas and want the cheapest possible backup for the deepest cold, we keep or replace the furnace and run the two as a hybrid. If you would rather leave gas behind, an electric air handler with heat strips covers the rest.

  • 1950s ductwork can't move the air a heat pump needs

Heat pumps deliver warm air at a lower temperature than a furnace, so they need more airflow to carry the same heat. Undersized returns and crushed flex duct in a Scarborough or Etobicoke bungalow choke that. We measure static pressure, add or enlarge returns and seal joints so the system you pay for performs.

  • Your 100 amp panel is already full

Our ESA-licensed electricians run a load calculation first. Many Toronto homes can take a 240V heat pump circuit on the existing service once we tidy up the panel. When they cannot, a panel upgrade goes into the written quote, not onto a surprise invoice.

  • The neighbour's bedroom window is two metres from where the unit would sit

Toronto has a noise bylaw that covers outdoor equipment, and a cranky neighbour is worse than any bylaw. We pick a quiet inverter unit, Kepler when quiet is the priority, keep it off the shared wall and point the discharge away from their window.

  • Your condo board or property manager wants drawings before they say yes

Boards usually want to know the unit size, where it mounts, how it drains and how loud it is. We put that together for you so the approval does not stall the install.

  • Sound familiar?

Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.

What heat pump installation costs in Toronto

Starting prices for the two systems Toronto homes ask for most. Final pricing depends on the size we calculate, the ductwork or wall heads needed, and the electrical work.

How a Toronto heat pump install goes

Four steps, with the rebate and permits handled on our side of the table.

  1. 1

    Site visit and heat-loss calculation

A technician measures the house, checks walls, attic insulation, windows, ducts and the panel, then runs a Manual J style heat loss so the unit is sized for your home, not a guess.

  2. 2

    Placement plan and guaranteed quote

You get one written price with the outdoor unit location, indoor equipment, electrical scope and your rebate estimate laid out. We confirm eligibility and file pre-approval before any install date is booked.

  3. 3

    Install day

Our crew works with your lot, whether that means carrying a condenser down a laneway or bracketing it onto brick. Licensed refrigeration techs braze and pressure test the lines, pull a vacuum and weigh in the charge.

  4. 4

    Commissioning and handover

We run the system in heating and cooling, set up the thermostat, register the warranty, file the final rebate documents and show you what to check each season.

What is included in a Toronto heat pump installation

The quote covers the whole job. Here is what that means on a typical Toronto house.

  • Heat-loss sizing and a written, guaranteed price before anything is ordered
  • Outdoor unit on a pad or wall bracket, with vibration isolation and clearance for airflow
  • Line set in a protective cover, brazed, nitrogen pressure tested and vacuumed to spec
  • Dedicated 240V circuit by an ESA-licensed electrician, with the Electrical Safety Authority notification filed
  • Indoor coil, air handler or wall heads, plus condensate drainage that will not freeze or flood the basement
  • Duct static pressure check and return-air fixes where the old ducts need help
  • Thermostat setup, warranty registration and your rebate paperwork
  • Cleanup, and a walk-through so you know what the sounds and defrost cycles mean

How we size a heat pump for a Toronto semi or bungalow

Old Toronto brick loses heat through solid walls and thin attic insulation, so a 1,400 square foot semi can need more heating capacity than a newer 2,000 square foot house in Markham. That is why we never size from square footage. We measure the envelope and run the numbers.

Then we find the balance point. That is the outdoor temperature where the heat pump's output meets the house's heat loss. Below it, backup heat helps out. On Enbridge gas, that backup is usually your furnace in a hybrid setup. On Toronto Hydro alone, it is electric strips in an air handler that run only on the coldest nights and during defrost.

Oversizing is the most common mistake we see on Toronto installs. A unit that is too big short cycles, leaves the house clammy in July and wears out early. An inverter heat pump sized right runs long and low, which is exactly what a draughty old house wants.

  • Heat loss measured room by room, not estimated
  • Capacity checked at -15°C, not just the nameplate
  • Backup heat sized to the balance point for your fuel
  • Ductwork tested so the airflow matches the unit

Frequently asked questions

How much does heat pump installation cost in Toronto?

Heat pump installation in Toronto starts at $5,500 installed for a cold-climate ducted system, before rebates. Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements such as wall brackets, duct changes and the 240V circuit, so we give you a written, guaranteed quote after the site visit.

How long does a heat pump install take in a Toronto home?

Most single-system heat pump installations in Toronto are finished in one working day once pre-approval and equipment are in place. Multi-zone ductless jobs, duct repairs or a panel upgrade can add a day. We give you the schedule in writing with the quote rather than a promise over the phone.

Can I get the full $7,500 rebate if my Toronto home is heated with Enbridge gas?

Usually not the full amount. The Home Renovation Savings Program pays the top tier, up to $7,500, to homes heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood, while Enbridge gas-heated homes commonly receive up to $2,000. The amount depends on heat pump size, pre-approval must be in place before installation, and program terms can change, so we confirm eligibility with you first.

Do I need a permit for a heat pump installation in Toronto?

The electrical work for a heat pump is done by an ESA-licensed electrician and filed with the Electrical Safety Authority, and we look after any City of Toronto permit or property manager approval the job needs. Condo and townhouse owners usually need written sign-off on placement, and we prepare that request.

Will a heat pump fit a narrow Toronto lot or laneway house?

Yes. We install heat pumps on wall brackets, in rear yards, on flat roofs where the structure allows, and in laneway houses with careful line set routing. The site visit settles where the outdoor unit goes and how we keep it quiet for the neighbours before you sign anything.

Can a ductless heat pump cool the third floor of a Toronto semi?

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do in the east end and the Annex. A single-zone ductless head on the top floor handles the heat that pools up there in July, and the same unit heats that floor in winter so the radiators or furnace work less.
