Cold-climate heat pumps with a furnace backup for the deep freeze
Heat pump installation in Ottawa has to pass one test: the house stays warm at -25°C and the hydro bill stays sane. We install Midea EVOX G3 and Kepler cold-climate heat pumps rated to -30°C, sized from a room-by-room heat-loss calculation, and we keep your gas furnace as backup when that's the smart play for your home. Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program can return up to $7,500, and we file the paperwork.

Heat pump jobs go wrong in Ottawa for predictable reasons. Here's what we see, and how we do the install so it doesn't happen to you.
A 2,400 square foot home in Riverside South with new windows and a 2,400 square foot brick house in the Glebe need very different equipment. We run a room-by-room heat-loss calculation at Ottawa's design temperature, then pick the size that carries the house at -25°C without short cycling in October.
The ones sold here a generation ago didn't. The Midea EVOX G3 and Kepler units we install are rated to -30°C and hold most of their output at -15°C, thanks to inverter compressors and vapour injection. For the few nights past the rating, your furnace or an electric air handler takes over on its own. Our cold climate heat pump page explains the engineering.
Baseboards turn one unit of electricity into one unit of heat. A cold-climate heat pump delivers two to three for the same hydro, and because your home is electrically heated it lands in the higher rebate tier, up to $7,500. We pair it with an electric air handler so the backup strips only run when they must.
Older homes inside the Greenbelt often have ducts on the main floor only, or old trunks that can't carry enough air. A multi-zone ductless system puts a quiet wall head in each bedroom, or a slim ducted unit in the attic feeds short runs. Either way, no plaster comes down.
It depends on what heats your home today. Enbridge gas-heated homes commonly qualify for up to $2,000. Homes on electricity, oil, propane or wood can reach up to $7,500 based on the size of the heat pump. The unit must be on NRCan's qualified list and pre-approval must be in before install day. We check both, then file the paperwork.
A ducted heat pump needs its own 240V circuit, and some older 100 amp panels in Alta Vista and Nepean are already crowded. Our ESA-licensed electricians run a load calculation first. Often the heat pump fits without a panel upgrade. When it doesn't, we price the upgrade in the same written quote.
Ottawa summers are sticky, and a single-speed AC that cools too fast leaves the moisture behind. An inverter heat pump runs long, low cycles that pull water out of the air, so 24°C feels like 24°C. One outdoor unit handles the humidex in July and the cold in January.
Cold-climate heat pumps defrost themselves, but the water has to go somewhere. We set the unit on a raised stand above typical snow depth, keep it clear of the roof drip edge, and route the defrost water so it doesn't freeze into a skating rink under the coil.
Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.
Cold-climate heat pumps start at $5,500 installed. The final number depends on size, whether you keep your furnace or add an air handler, electrical work and line set length, and you get it in writing before anything is ordered.
| Service | Typical price in Ottawa |
|---|---|
| Cold-climate heat pump, installed Midea EVOX G3 or Kepler, 2 to 5 ton, rated to -30°C | From $5,500 |
| Ductless mini split, one zone Midea or Kepler wall unit with outdoor unit and line set | Written quote |
Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements, and every job gets a written, guaranteed quote. Qualifying cold-climate heat pumps can bring back up to $7,500 through the Home Renovation Savings Program, and financing runs 0% for 3, 6 or 9 months on approved credit.
Four steps, and you see the price before step three.
We measure the house room by room, check the ducts, the panel and the spot where the outdoor unit will sit, and ask how you heat today.
One written price for the full scope, with your rebate tier spelled out. Pre-approval goes in before we book the install, because the program requires it.
Licensed refrigeration techs run and pressure-test the line set, pull a vacuum and weigh in the charge. ESA-licensed electricians add the 240V circuit. Most single-system installs wrap up in a day.
We set the hybrid switchover point, walk you through the thermostat, register the warranty and file the final rebate documents.
We're an authorized Midea and Kepler dealer. Both lines below are rated to -30°C, and the ducted models sit on NRCan's qualified list, which the rebate requires.

Every heat pump quote covers the whole job, not just the box on the pad.

Sizing is where heat pump installation in Ottawa is won or lost. Pick a unit by square footage and you get one of two bad outcomes: a heat pump that can't keep up in January, or one so large it short cycles through the shoulder seasons and never dehumidifies in July.
We start with a room-by-room heat-loss calculation at Ottawa's design temperature, which is well below what a Toronto installer plans for. That number tells us how many BTU the house needs at the bottom of a cold snap. Then we read the manufacturer's capacity table at -15°C and -25°C, not the nameplate tonnage, because a 3 ton unit at 8°C is not a 3 ton unit at -25°C.
For a home on Enbridge gas, we usually recommend a hybrid. The heat pump carries the house down to a balance point we set from your Hydro Ottawa and Enbridge rates, and the furnace takes over below it. For a home on baseboards or oil, an electric air handler with auxiliary strips covers the few nights past the rating. Either way you get the math on paper, and it fits into everything else we do for heating and cooling in Ottawa.

Your quote is your final price. No surprise extras on the agreed scope of work.

Replaces our AC with a new heat pump in Ottawa and the whole experience was outstanding. From the first call, Dustin was incredibly responsive and communicated clearly every step of the way. He cut through all the usual sales fluff and got straight to what mattered — options, costs, timelines, and what made the most sense for our home. They addressed every concern I had, explained the details discussed my technical questions, and handled the installation quickly and professionally. The quality of the work is excellent, everything was done cleanly, and the system has been running perfectly since. Pricing was fair and transparent, and there were no surprises. It’s rare to find a company that combines speed, honesty, and solid workmanship like this. Highly recommended.
Efficient Home Improvements truly went above and beyond. Our furnace failed on Christmas Eve in Ottawa, and their team stayed up late (3:00am) that night to replace it. Their responsiveness, professionalism, and dedication during the holidays were exceptional. The work was completed efficiently, and everything was explained clearly. It’s rare to find a company willing to sacrifice their own holiday time to ensure a customer’s home is warm and safe. I highly recommend Efficient Home improvements to anyone in need of reliable and compassionate service.
We had a heat pump/AC unit installed by EHI, on time, on budget, great workmanship. Julian and team were knowledgeable and courteous. Dustin communicated well and is managing our government rebate for the new efficient system. Thank you Team!

Had a tankless water heater installed and couldn’t be happier. The installation was quick, professional, and the system works great — endless hot water and more efficient than my old tank. Highly recommend!
Dustin and his team were really responsive and helpful in getting us a new heat pump to replace our broken AC unit. The team went above and beyond helping us through the process and answering other questions about the house we recently moved in to. I would highly recommend Efficient Home Improvements for any of your HVAC needs.

Heat pump installation in Ottawa starts at $5,500 installed for a cold-climate ducted system. Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements, such as backup heat, electrical work and line set length, so we give you a written, guaranteed quote after the heat-loss visit. Eligible homes can get up to $7,500 back after the install.
Yes, a cold-climate heat pump rated to -30°C keeps running on a -25°C night, though its output drops as the temperature falls. That's why we size from a heat-loss calculation and pair it with a backup, your gas furnace in most Enbridge homes or an electric air handler elsewhere, so the house never depends on the heat pump alone at the extreme.
The balance point is the outdoor temperature where the system switches from the heat pump to the gas furnace. We set it from your actual Hydro Ottawa and Enbridge rates and the heat pump's efficiency at each temperature, so the cheaper fuel is the one running at every point in the winter.
The best time to book is late summer or early fall, before the first cold snap fills the schedule. That leaves room for the heat-loss visit and the rebate pre-approval, which must be in place before installation. We set the install date with you directly once pre-approval is confirmed.
Homes heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood can qualify for up to $7,500 through the Home Renovation Savings Program, while Enbridge gas-heated homes commonly qualify for up to $2,000. The heat pump must be on NRCan's qualified list, and the program's terms can change, so we confirm your eligibility before the install.
Not always. A ducted heat pump needs a dedicated 240V circuit, and many 100 amp panels have room once we run a load calculation. If yours doesn't, our ESA-licensed electricians include the panel upgrade in the same guaranteed quote, and 0% financing for 3, 6 or 9 months is available on approved credit.
