AC Repair · Barrie
What five months of drifts and roof slides do to an outdoor unit
AC repair in Barrie is a spring and summer story with a winter cause. The outdoor unit sat under lake-effect snow for months, took a few hits from ice sliding off the roof, maybe hosted a family of mice, and now it won't start on the first muggy day. Our licensed refrigeration technicians find what the winter broke, quote it in writing and get the house cool again, from Allandale to Holly and across our Ontario service area.

A Barrie AC works a short season and spends the rest of the year buried. That shapes what fails.
Months of freeze and thaw are hard on a run capacitor, and the first real demand in June is when it lets go. The compressor hums, can't start and trips. We test the capacitor and contactor, replace what failed and check the compressor amperage so you know it survived.
Ice sliding off a steel or shingle roof lands on whatever is below, and an AC under the eaves takes the hit. A bent fan blade wobbles, chews its motor bearing and can strike the shroud. We replace the blade or motor, straighten crushed fins and talk about a better spot or a stand if the unit is in the slide path.
Frost heave lifts one corner of a ground pad every winter. A tilted condenser strains the line set at the service valves, which is where leaks start, and it hurts oil return to the compressor. We relevel or replace the pad, or move the unit to a raised stand, and pressure test the lines.
A warm condenser cabinet is prime winter real estate for mice. They strip the low-voltage wiring and pack the base with nesting that blocks drainage. We clean it out, repair the wiring and seal the obvious entry points.
A refrigerant leak, often at a joint stressed by ice load or a heaved pad, or a dirty coil starving the system of airflow. We find the leak with nitrogen and a detector, repair it, pull a vacuum and weigh in a fresh charge rather than topping up every summer.
Painswick and Holly two-storeys with one system and a basement thermostat are the classic case. The problem is airflow and balance, not always the AC. We check the blower speed, dampers and coil before anyone talks about a bigger unit.
Humid air off Kempenfelt Bay needs an AC that runs long enough to wring it out. An oversized unit cools fast, shuts off and leaves the moisture. We check cycle times and refrigerant charge, and if the unit really is oversized, we say so when it is time to replace.
Cottonwood fluff, grass clippings and a winter's worth of grit on the condenser coil make the unit run longer for less. A proper coil cleaning and a charge check usually brings the bill back down.
Describe the problem and we'll tell you what it usually is, what it costs to fix, and whether it's worth fixing.
Repair pricing is quoted after diagnosis, in writing, before we touch a part. If the quote is big enough that replacement makes sense, a cold-climate heat pump from $5,500 is usually the smarter buy in a heating-heavy city like Barrie.
| Service | Typical price in Barrie |
|---|---|
| AC repair Diagnostic visit plus common parts such as capacitors, contactors and refrigerant leak repair | Quote after diagnosis |
| Central air conditioner, installed Lennox or Midea, sized from a heat-gain calculation | Written quote |
| Cold-climate heat pump, installed Midea EVOX G3 or Kepler, 2 to 5 ton, rated to -30°C | From $5,500 |
Installed pricing depends on size and installation requirements, and every job gets a written, guaranteed quote. Qualifying cold-climate heat pumps can bring back up to $7,500 through the Home Renovation Savings Program, and financing runs 0% for 3, 6 or 9 months on approved credit.
One visit for most repairs, with the price agreed before any work.
Call or use the form. Tell us the symptom and whether the unit sits under a roof edge, on a ground pad or on a stand. If there is no cooling and someone in the home is vulnerable to heat, say so and we'll treat it as urgent.
A licensed refrigeration technician checks the pad, fins, fan, wiring and line set for what the snow did, then tests capacitor, contactor, pressures and amp draws to find the actual fault.
You get the repair price before we start. On an older unit you also get the replacement number, including the heat pump option, so you can decide with both in front of you.
Common parts are on the truck. We complete the repair, clean the coil if it needs it, measure the temperature drop across the evaporator and confirm the unit is cooling at its rated capacity.
A cold-climate heat pump is an air conditioner that runs in reverse to heat, and in Barrie that second job matters more than the first. It cools like a central AC in July, carries most of the heating season, and a qualifying model earns a rebate a plain air conditioner never will. These are the units we install.

Every visit covers the winter checks, not just the part that failed.

Barrie cools for a few months and heats for the rest of the year. When an air conditioner finally dies, spending the money on a machine that only works in summer leaves a lot on the table.
A cold-climate heat pump costs more than a basic AC up front, but it does both jobs. In July it is a central air conditioner with a variable-speed compressor that runs long, quiet cycles and pulls humidity out of lakefront air properly. From October to April it takes over most of the heating from your Enbridge furnace in a hybrid setup, or from baseboards in an all-electric home.
Then there is the rebate. A plain AC gets nothing. A qualifying heat pump can bring back up to $7,500 through the Home Renovation Savings Program for electric, propane or oil heated homes, and commonly up to $2,000 for Enbridge gas homes. We confirm eligibility and file pre-approval before installation.
We still install straight air conditioners when that is the right call, and we quote both without a sales pitch. For the general repair-or-replace rules, see our AC repair and maintenance page. For the full picture of what we do in the city, see HVAC in Barrie.

Your quote is your final price. No surprise extras on the agreed scope of work.

We had a heat pump/AC unit installed by EHI, on time, on budget, great workmanship. Julian and team were knowledgeable and courteous. Dustin communicated well and is managing our government rebate for the new efficient system. Thank you Team!
Replaces our AC with a new heat pump in Ottawa and the whole experience was outstanding. From the first call, Dustin was incredibly responsive and communicated clearly every step of the way. He cut through all the usual sales fluff and got straight to what mattered — options, costs, timelines, and what made the most sense for our home. They addressed every concern I had, explained the details discussed my technical questions, and handled the installation quickly and professionally. The quality of the work is excellent, everything was done cleanly, and the system has been running perfectly since. Pricing was fair and transparent, and there were no surprises. It’s rare to find a company that combines speed, honesty, and solid workmanship like this. Highly recommended.
Recently got a shiny new heat pump installed. Went very well, nice unit and it works soooo quietly. These fine folks were very easy to deal with, professional and thourough. Would highly recommend.
Efficient Home Improvements truly went above and beyond. Our furnace failed on Christmas Eve in Ottawa, and their team stayed up late (3:00am) that night to replace it. Their responsiveness, professionalism, and dedication during the holidays were exceptional. The work was completed efficiently, and everything was explained clearly. It’s rare to find a company willing to sacrifice their own holiday time to ensure a customer’s home is warm and safe. I highly recommend Efficient Home improvements to anyone in need of reliable and compassionate service.
I recently had a new furnace and tankless water heater installed by this company. Excellent service by both office and technicians , I highly recommend!

Had a tankless water heater installed and couldn’t be happier. The installation was quick, professional, and the system works great — endless hot water and more efficient than my old tank. Highly recommend!
Dustin and his team were really responsive and helpful in getting us a new heat pump to replace our broken AC unit. The team went above and beyond helping us through the process and answering other questions about the house we recently moved in to. I would highly recommend Efficient Home Improvements for any of your HVAC needs.

AC repair cost in Barrie depends on the part that failed, so we quote every repair in writing after diagnosis and before any work. Capacitors, contactors and fan motors are modest repairs; a compressor or evaporator coil on an old unit can approach the price of a new system, and at that point we show you the replacement options, including a cold-climate heat pump from $5,500 installed.
We book Barrie AC repairs seven days a week, with emergency service in the evenings and on holidays when there is no cooling and someone in the home is at risk from heat. We give you a realistic window when you call rather than a promise we can't keep during a heat wave.
An air conditioner that won't start after winter most often has a failed run capacitor, a stuck contactor, chewed wiring from rodents or a tripped breaker. Check the breaker and the outdoor disconnect first, then call us. Do not keep trying to start a humming compressor, because that can damage it.
A breathable top cover or a piece of plywood weighted over the fan keeps roof-slide ice and heavy snow out of the fan and fins. Never wrap the whole unit in plastic, because trapped moisture rusts the cabinet and mice love a sealed, dry box. Raising the unit onto a stand does more good than any cover.
A capacitor or fan motor on a 15-year-old AC is usually worth fixing. A compressor or major refrigerant leak on a unit that age usually is not, and in Barrie the replacement that makes the most sense is often a cold-climate heat pump, which cools in summer, heats most of the winter and qualifies for a rebate.
Yes. Financing runs 0% for 3, 6 or 9 months on approved credit, with open loans from 2.99% OAC. If you replace the AC with a qualifying cold-climate heat pump, the rebate from the Home Renovation Savings Program comes back after installation, and we handle the paperwork.
